shotgun inserts from MCA

Does anyone have any experience with shotgun inserts from MCA?  I am thinking about ordering a 30/30 rifle insert for my IZH-94 Sever 22 mag/20 gauge. 

I am primarily concerned about accuracy of the inserts, and whether it would be best to order the 18" insert instead of the 10".

  I've owned several different ones over the years, this one is 12ga. - 45/70...



  Biggest problem is getting them to shoot to the sights of the gun they are in...

About 40 years ago some friends of mine in Germany experimented with using TWO eccentric rings at the front of the insert barrel.  It only worked with a .22 (or 5.56mm) barrel in a 12 gauge. To sight it in, you rotated the eccentrics in opposite directions and locked them with set-screws.

  The "good" ones that are made today, ARE adjustable to the sights of the gun.  They also lock into place, and always come back to zero...  They have to be fitted, and are very expensive, but they really work too...

I talked to my local gunsmith today about using a 30-30 18" insert in my 20 gauge IZH-94.  He was definitely against the idea, saying that it would be quite dangerous.  A search of the net has revealed conflicting opionions.  I'll put this insert idea on hold until more info is obtained.

  And why would it be dangerous???  I'm thinking you need to find a smith that has more experience in this area...

DM,  The gunsmith said that shotguns, and my combo gun, were not designed for the high pressures of larger rifle cartridges.  He mentioned that rifle pressures of a 30-30 would be at least double that of a 20 gauge shotgun.  He added that the extractors would also have to be changed.  He was an older guy, and seemed knowledgeable, but what do I know--I'm a newbie. 

My 22 mag/20 gauge IZH-94 Sever has the shotgun barrel on the bottom, which would seem stronger placement for a 30-30 insert.  My gun appears very tight and up to the task, but lacking knowledge I don't want to take chances.  I was looking forward to getting that insert.

  The pressure of the 30-30 is contained WITHIN the insert bbl...  In other words, the insert bbl is a "bbl and chamber", and it exerts none on the pressure to the shot bbl...  As for back pressure, your shotgun will easily handle the back pressure from a 30-30...

I have the 18" .30-30 insert.  I have used it in my single shot 20 gauge smooth bore slug gun as well as my IZH 94 Sever (.22 magnum over 20 gauge).   No pressure problems.   My only complaint.  It is one shot.  There is no extracter.  You need a cleaning rod to pop out the shell after you pull the barrel out.

I think I could live with using a cleaning rod to extract the shell.  How is the accuracy with the insert?

Another question about inserts.  For a 20 gauge, what would be the best caliber insert to use?  I considered the 30-30 since it would supply more range than a rifled slug in 20 gauge, and more knockdown power than my 22 mag. 30-30 ammo is also plentiful and relatively inexpensive. Would one of the pistol cartridges be better than a centerfire rifle cartridge in my IZH-94 22 mag/20 gauge combo. I recall vaguely Drilling man once said he preferred rimmed cartridges (ideally) for his inserts.  Sure would hate to buy one caliber and then wish i had bought another type.

Can Drilling Man or Sir Charles provide some more information on the fitted and amiable inserts?
The MCA inserts sound like they have some limitations but seem to be the only game in town. Except for the few hints I see on this thread. I'd love to have a tack driving rim fire over center fire double rifle!!!
I've got a savage 24C. I put a Leupold 1.5-5x on it as my eyes just have to have glass any more. The .22lr is quite accurate and I even took it to the local silhouette shoot 12lb trigger and all. Chickens at 40m, pigs at 60m, turkeys at 80 and rams at 100.  I hit 20 out of 40! The targets were larger than NRA sizes and that score isn't going to bring home any trophies but still....!:-)
So, the .22 shoots "great"; slugs however hit somewhere else.  I need an adjustable insert to have my ultimate squirrel and deer rifle.

The only adjustable inserts are the Krieghoff.  They pop up from time to time on gunbroker.  I have the .22 WMR inserts on most of my drillings.
