Hi Nova

Colt did make both a steel frame, and an aluminum frame version of the Commander.  At one time I had both, and they were nice guns.  Try and internet search with something like "Colt commander serial numbers".  I'm sure you will find something

The R.L.Wilson book says 1979 started with CLW032801 and 1980 started with CLW042849.

Larry: I have a older model with at least 10K rounds of hardball through it and it is still my favorite and most often carried pistol.  Don't let any detractors fool, bs or try to scare you into getting rid of it.  jmtcw.
