As long as the stock is a close fit, eye relief isn't real critical on a 223. When you purchase the scope you want set it up on the rifle for the child. What I mean is----while they have the rifle in the shooting position and their cheek on the stock where it should be, have the scope in the rings(finger tight only) and slide it till they have a proper sight picture. Don't get me wrong, eye relief is important but its much more critical on the "hard kickers". Dave
