How many here go off-road?
« on: April 23, 2009, 05:40:03 AM »
I was looking at an old color film from the late 1940's where motorcyclists were riding Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles on dirt trails in the woods.

Those motorcycles were all steel back then, but they seem to be smaller and lighter than the big 'cruiser' type of motorcycles made by H-D today.

Hello from Georgia,

I have no HD but do have a Suzuki DR650 Dual Sport. I chose this motorcycle because I do a lot of off road riding. This bike is a beast both on and off road. I have a pretty aggressive tire set on right now, and it does great in the nasty stuff. As a 650 goes, it is not as light an nimble as a smaller bike, but still is pretty agile, yet is big enough to ride well on the interstate. I have had it about 6 months and have already put 8,000 miles on it. A bunch of those miles have been down fire breaks, through open pastures and fields, and a few miles on a dirt track. I think everyone should have one of these Dual Sport bikes. I also believe that Harley Davidson is missing out on a huge market by not offering this type of motorcycle. I would much rather ride an American bike, but right now I am making the Suzuki scream !!! Have a great day.

normally i ride in the street a 97 flht with a s&s 96 in engine. loads of fun trust me.ive got got a yam xt600 that i love to ride also.my 13 yr old son rides a yamxt225 too.if i had to choose id prob go with the dual sport bike. its just too much fun. ive been a hd rider all my life but dang them dual sports are fun!actually if i had to choose one bike it would be a sporty built and set up as a dual sport. hard to resist that low end torque.however as a old fat boy the fl does have its attractions.bikes are just a addiction,id like to have one of every kind and size.

When my son turned 10 I went and bought two Honda Dirt bikes.  He's now 20 and still likes to hit the trails on the Honda.  He's now riding the 250 I bought for myself.

I do. Had a '90 Tengai, now a 2008 KLR. Kinda big bikes, but I'm physically large-ish... you need good knobbies like Pirelli MT21's on 'em if you are at all going to get in nasty stuff. Skid plate adds to the 'ol peace of mind too...

I was on the Alligator Dual-Sport ride in Daytona back in like '93 and a guy had a Sporty set up w/knobbies... I have no idea how far he made it. He was wearing a chrome WW2 German helmet, nice touch   :)

I been off road a couple of times, never intentional. Makes bike mucho dirty.  In WW2 the Army used WLs[45] and an odd unit designated XD. It was a flat deuce similar to the early BMWs.

As rough as our roads are in Oklahoma even on the road is like off road.   Here is where I went the other day.  I normally take the 4 wheeler to check our deer lease but I took the DL650 this time.

Your bike is designed for both on/off road?

I used to ride a dirt bike years ago! It was a lot of fun but since those days, I have leaned toward the bigger smoother rides ok. The body can only take so much abuse and riding a dirt bike off road is abuse.
I have traded in the big flat tracker and the chopper too! Now it is simply taking a 3 hour ride on the V-4 Yamaha Royal Venture with the wife on the back. Now unlike my Harley of yester year, I don't even have to shift out of overdrive going up hills with this well engineered motorcycle. It has 110hp and that is plenty to move us down route 66!!!  ;D  ;D  ;D

Every year I see lots of Bikes come to Alaska.  Lots of Harleys, Goldwings, and Touring type bikes.  Also lots of Cruisers.  I also see many guys on Kawasaki, and Suzuki duel sports bikes.  Many people head to the North Slope, up the Haul Road (Dalton Highway).  Then I see them coming back through town.  The Duel Sports bikes look pretty much like they did when they left, just dirty.  All the other bikes come limping back into town, heading to the shop, missing windshields, busted fairings, bent fenders and handlebars.  Usually they turned around at the Yukon River, some even made it to Cold Foot.  Have only talked to a few that made it all the way to Dead Horse.

It's a real bear just getting to the highway from my house.  I have a mile of gravel road, made up of rocks the size of your fist, before getting to pavement.  I just take it slow on my Yamaha Touring bike.

Just like one rifle doesn't do everything, I have a few bikes.  I love my XT225 dual sport, its super light and narrow, great for tight single track, not too much power and weight, but more like a nimble mountain goat.  It'll do 65 all day on the highway, but not exactly a confidence inspiring ride at those speeds with knobby tires.  It's at home on the fireroads and logging trails.  I laid it down going up and down stuff a little over my head and out of my skill level, but it being what it is, it is super cheap to replace fenders, bars, and other parts.  If I lay down one of my sportbikes I', looking at 1,000 easy in repairs, but the ole XT can take a whipping and come out with 50 bucks in repairs to be good as new.  65 MPG and $58.00 a year for full coverage, its probably my most usefull ride.

One of the better looking buells I've seen.  Dunno, just never been my cup of tea, kinda nor here nor there.  I know they have a die hard following to some folks.  Didn't they can the bull, or the thunderolt or something?  One of their more popular models?
