Fiddler's Green
« on: April 23, 2009, 06:30:47 AM »
For those Non-Cavalrymen out there who are not familiar with it, and who asked, here is the Poem "Fiddler's Green."  For any old Troopers, "Gary Owen."

Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the trail to Hell
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead Troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen,
And this eternal resting place is
known as Fiddler's Green.

Marching past straight through to Hell
The Infantry can be seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene,
No Trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen,
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a sabre keen,
Or in roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddler's Green.

FIRST AIR CALVARY (By: Chris Woolnough)

MY COUNTRY GAVE ME THE HONOR,
OF BEING A WOUNDED VET,
I SERVED MY TIME IN VIETNAM,
DURING THE OFFENSIVE KNOWN AS TET.

WE WERE A DIVISION OF SOLDIERS,
WHOSE GALLANTRY HAS NO MATCH,
OUR INSIGNIA IN BLACK AND YELLOW,
HAS A HORSE HEAD ON ITS PATCH.

I WAS WITH THE UNIT,
THAT WAS KNOWN FOR ITS BRAVERY,
WE WERE PROUD TO BE THE MEMBERS,
OF THE FIRST AIR CALVARY.

THERE WERE NO WORDS NEEDED,
IT WAS SIMPLY UNDERSTOOD,
THE SOLDIERS THAT SERVED TOGETHER,
HAVE FORMED A BROTHERHOOD.

WE WOULD GIVE OUR LIFE FOR ONE ANOTHER,
WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO THE WIRE,
AS THE FIRST CAV. SERVED WITH HONOR,
AND COURAGE UNDER FIRE.

Thanks Skunk, I never heard that before.

Let me share an email I got from a member here.  He sent it to me after I posted "Fiddlers Green."

"First I've heard of it...gotta say it brought a tear to my eyes.
My youngest son is on his second tour in Iraq, 19D ( Cavalry Scout ) with the 1st. Cav.
Very nearly lost him in '07."

This member is not the type to make his business public, and I pray he will forgive me for posting part of his email, but reading it made my heart cry for him.  What he and others in his position go through would be more then I could bear.   :'(

Compelling I must say.  I have served.  Placed my life in the hands of brothers and sisters and returned the honor on my watches.  However, I never had to rest their souls.

know the song well
spent 13 months in A trp 2/7th cav ft hood texas june 88- july 89
advoided becoming an 11m mechanized infantyman when i left 1/16th in germany in the summer of 88.  the battalion was converting over to bradleys at that time and making everyone 11m no ifs ands or buts
i was a dismount team leader in the back of 113,s
then i got to ft hood and they gave all 11b nco,s the choice to either go to 41st infantry in 2nd armoured and become 11m or go to one of the cav task forces in 1st cav and be assigned as an 11c mortarman
i said where is the cav patch!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
really had my fill of being around mech infantry not to mention being a big target also
i spent 13 months dropping 4.2 illum rounds for the tankers in our task force
learned quite a bit about mortars and gunnery

went to korea to the 2/503rd was a scout squad leader and that started my time as a light infantryman and then to the 101st 3 times each time with a tour in korea in between
i was happy to be a light infantryman for the rest of my career

and saying goodbye to young soldiers who you looked at as sons and friends that you raised up from privates straight out of benning is hard and it sucks and yes like others have said survivors guilt is something to deal with on certain days

i send the families of 3 soldiers christmas cards every year, just very cordial and well wishes, nothing said about loss ........
work harder, millions of obama,s voters on welfare depend on you.

dead, down and on the ground.

Couple question Richard, iffin you don't mind. Did you keep up with your piloting skills after your tour of duty? Can you or do you still pilot choppers in civilian life?

Sorry this took so long?   :-[

Did you keep up with your piloting skills

I did for a long time but I haven't flown for years now.

I've still got all my commercial tickets but like I say, I just haven't used them.  I don't even know what the currency requirements are nowadays.  It used to be 3 takeoffs and landings within X months/days and you were considered current!  ::)

Every once in a while I get the urge to just go out and fly for my own amazement (I occasionally get the same feeling about jumping out of aeroplanes) but like the hots at my age, those feelings quickly pass!   Thank goodness!!  ;D

Good stuff there Richard. I figured that once flying gets in your blood, it would be pretty hard to put down the urge.

Yours Truly was  a peon with the 12th Cav( Blue Lancers), 1st Cav( Mech) in Korea from 61-62 about the time the Berlin Wall went UP.  ;)

That was a just a couple of years before the 1st Cav got to come back to the States from Korea for it's redesignation!  [ 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile) ]   ;)

I always had a soft spot for the 12th Cav.  If it wasn't for a Company of that Regiment I'd probably be dead right now.   :-\
