Must the curse continue?
« on: April 23, 2009, 06:41:15 AM »
Warning: I'm venting in this post.

Last year was a disaster for shooting because it was the windiest year ever in my area. And the winds were almost always unfavorable. Most of the time I'd go to the range and I'd get buffeted around so much that I didn't even fire a round. (I shoot pistol standing, one handed.) I did a lot more shotgunning, and shooting in the indoor range.

This year looks like a continuation: cold and windy on weekends.

I don't like to use indoor ranges year round, but maybe if the wind continues this year, I'll have to commit to shooting indoors more. I won't like that.

Grrr!

At least you have a place to shoot  :-\

The ranges here are so crowded on the weekends you'll sit and wait and for an hour or two just to get a bench (at hard telling what distance).

I won't even bother going anymore unless it's one of the rare week day afternoons I have off.

learn to dope the wind as much a part of shooting as getting the sights to be where the bullet hits .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Shootall:

The issue is not with wind deflection of the bullet, it's wind deflection of the shooter. I only shoot one-handed and standing. If I'm being blown around there is no point in shooting.

I was just shooting the .30-06 and the .357 the guys here graciously refurbished and replaced and it was so windy, I had to quit.  The bullets weren't doing too badly, but the shooter was.  Better luck early tomorrow morning.

My home range is never crowded.  All youze guys is welcome.

High winds are  good practice for compensating at long range. I've fired my 45s, and others,  well over 100 yds at gallon jugs in high winds to where I'd have to aim left 8 10 ft. Not difficult with a bit of practice. I rarely shoot one handed though, and generally use 2 hands and a rest if available at 100 + yds. It's actually about 130 yds that I shoot my handguns. Use the wind, experiment, enjoy. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

No, GB. I'm just narrowly focused on bullseye. I could solve this problem by simply going back to silhouette shooting, with which I can shoot from a resting position near the ground. Hmm. Maybe I'll just do that. Time to dust off the old Contender and make some silhouette targets.

Hot dang! I may as well. This coming weekend will be perfect: cool and windy.

Talk windy-you should live in Kansas--If you lose your hat here you don't chase it, you just reach up and get the next guys.  So hot here last summer a robin was using pot holders on worms!

Heck crummy weekends is why we work so much in Minnesota. I mean how can you not love 85 and great on Thursday turning to 50 for a high and high winds by Saturday? Oh well, maybe the fish will be biting down by the River?  Sooner or later it will get better, then winter the next weekend. LOL
