S&W M625 .45 Colt Mountain Gun

Just got this in a trade about a week ago.  I've seen lot's of .44s but this is the 1st .45C that I've seen and I've heard it was a special run and not too many were made.  Anyone know anything about them?  Value?

I don't know about a special run but, not very many are for sale, even on the S&W forum sites. I own a 629-4 Mountain Gun, what is the engineering dash on your gun?

SB, it's 625-6.  I know there was a 625 in .45acp and another in .45C both big guns but don't remember the engineering #on them.

SB, Do you know if the 6th change was to the .45C. and your saying that pre Clinton lock they are more valuable?  I think I have the box also.  The previous owner says he has it and will bring it to me.  I'm hoping it has the papers, etc. with it.  It's hard to determine a value when there's none for sale. Thanks.

The engineering changes(-s) are things like deleting the barrel pin, etc. Not caliber changes.

I have a 625-9 and paid $600 used,  was happy to get it.  Shoots great, but really shines with the 200 grn bullets.  This is due to the light Mountain Gun barrel.  With those Houge grips it handles the 255 ok but you deffinetly feel the change. ;D

I'm confused about your comment about the Mountain Gun barrel? What did you mean by this statement?

The barrel on the Mountain Gun is tapered and thus light weight.  Allowing more flip with heavier loads, look back at the above picture.  The other models have a heavy underlug.

Muzzle flip with a .45 Colt? HEHEHE. Can't be mine is (4" 25-5)very mellow, recoil wise.

Doesn't your 25-5 have the under lug go all the way to the front of the barrel and the barrel is not tapered correct?

Very nice, you would not think the difference in the two would affect recoil but it shure does!  Thanks for posting your pic.

One thing that may help your gun with recoil, is trying different grips. Those Houges you have on there aren't my idea of perfect grips? Maybe Herrett's(Jordon Troopers), or Pachmayr's that cover the backstrap?

The Packy Gripper just doesn't feel right in my hands.  The narrow shape feels long stretchin my finger to reach the trigger.  I like the signiture series but they are bulky and hard to hide for CCW.  Like the look of those Jordan grips thow. :D
