Ruger Mark II Target
« on: April 24, 2009, 10:33:18 AM »
I picked up a used but very good shape Ruger Mark II 5 1/2 inch bull barrel (blue with wood target grips) for $150.  I took a chance not knowing anything about these. I haven't had time to go to the range yet.  I suppose that will tell me if I got a good deal or not. The gun had just one magazine, so I went looking at Gander Mountain (because it is a retail store near me) but they only had Mark III magazines.  I bought one ($33 ouch) and it seems to fit the gun. Are the magazines between the Mark II and Mark III interchangeable? I may return the magazine and pick one up someplace online. Thanks for any information you have about this model gun as well as information about the magazine.

-Mike

Mike-

I have the same gun.  I mouinted a Simmons 2x pistol scope on it using B-Square clamp on, see thru mounts.  It has accounted for a boat load of tree rats, and is a great gun for the money.   I am not sure about the magazines.  Mine came with 2, so I have not tried any others.

I've owned 8 Mk. II's, in various configurations ( 7 at the same time) although I'm down to just 4 now. It is the finest semi-auto .22 ever developed, in my opinion. I used one  or the other for 11 years in bullseye competition, and various ones in IHMSA .22 competition since 1979 or 80. They also make superb squirrel hunting guns.

The Ruger Mark II is probably the best selling .22 semi-auto pistol of all time.  The are known for their rock solid dependability and good to excellent accuracy.  If something ever does wear out or break Ruger will take care of it at little or no expense.   Obviously I don't know what condition your particular gun is in but a would say $150 is a very good deal.  Most used ones fetch $250+ around here.

You're gonna love it...I bought mine in the mid-80s and with CCI Mini-Mag Hollow-Points I can hit a squirrel in the head at 25 yards...

They're kind of tricky to disassemble and reassemble but once you do it a couple of times you'll get the hang of it.

I recently ran into a problem with mine, it's a mk lll but close to the same gun. It kept stovepiping. The bolt was bone dry. A couple of drops of oil fixed it right up. Just a heads up.

Very nice .22.

I've had a Mark II Target for several years - a blued one with a 5 1/4" tapered barrel - that I really like the weight of.

IIRC, I've heard somewhere that either the Mark II & Mark III mags aren't interchangeable, or the grips - but I can't recall which.

I have a mark III hunter that I just purchased with the 7" barrel (if memory serves me correctly) and I have to say I really like this light weight plinker. It indeed seems decently accurate even with cheap bulk ammo.

You can't go wrong with the pistol you bought, and you got a fabulous price.  Read the manual online at Ruger's website -- it will tell you how to adjust the trigger overtravel.  There are almost as many aftermarket parts for Ruger pistols as there are for 10/22 rifles.  The Volquartsen target sear is a huge improvement, and Marvel's target trigger is the best of the bunch, IMO.  I have both in mine, and as others have noted, accuracy is very good.

GRIMJIM noted that full disassembly and reassembly is tricky at first, but you'll get the hang of it -- be careful to keep track of the pins in the grip section.  A tiny bit of thin tape on both sides of the frame will hold loose ones for you.  Full disassembly is required only to install the sear and/or trigger, to make trigger adjustments, or maybe once a year to get the last bit of grime out of the frame.

I hope you enjoy your Ruger as much as I have enjoyed mine.

I have the blue 67/8 in bbl GOVT model . It is by far the most accurate hand gun i ever shot . To be honest its the second one , the first had a front sight canted to the left . I sent it back , some guy from the factory called and ask what i was using the gun for so i told him IMHSA . He laughed and said he would send a test target he shot along with the factory test target and that he felt i would be pleased . So the new gun arrived and after the paperwork ( new gun ) i took it stright to the range with some Federal target loads that were 11 dollars a box before this mess we are in now . I looked at both targets , one neat little hole . cleaned the bore , set up target got on some sand bags and got one little hole . Its been the same ever since when i do my part . Its not nice to shoot a gun you can't blame for a miss !Buy your mags on line and save a ton of cash .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
