Like they keep telling them-
CARS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!

Where have I heard that before?
Or was it something similar?

Yeah well little cars are inherently unsafe to be in a wreck in and that's for sure. Two examples I'll mention one from long ago one from recently.

Not so long after we moved here I had gone to pick up Faye at school where she was working as in school suspension teacher. We were waiting on a line of traffic coming from the opposite direction to clear so we could turn left into our drive way. We were in my '86 F150 4x4 truck. A gal in a small red car make unknown to me at this late date hit us from the rear moving at some ridiculous speed for the 55 mph speed limit. She was likely going that at impact after skidding close to 100 yards before impact. Road was wet. It totalled her car and had she not had seat belts and shouder harness plus air bags likely would have killed her. It bent the bumper on the F150 a bit and bumped my head pretty hard on the rear window.

Just recently in the small college town of Jacksonville we were headed out of town and noticed a wreck in front of us. Speed limit ther is 35 mph tho clearly at impact the 3/4 ton pickup must have been going much faster. It hit the rear of a small car and knocked it into the vehicle in front of it. The small car looked as if a bomb had gone off in the rear seat. The bumper was seriously about at the back of the front seats. If anyone were in the back seat I can't imagine anyway they could have survived. It might have bent the front bumper of the truck but it didn't appear to have done so very much.

In both cases full size pick up trucks were involved and small cars. In both cases the small cars were totally wiped out and destroyed beyond repair. Both trucks suffered at most a bent bumper. Small cars are dangerous to run around in on today's highways. That's why I drive only full size trucks.

I stick with full size trucks also.

The question reminds me of riding a motorcycle. It's not you, you have to worry about it's the other guy.

William your premise is correct! However I think the headline was centering on a crash instead of operation.

And it is not always the operator of the small vehicle that causes the accident.  Example, several years ago a friend and his family stopped by one evening, they stayed and had supper with us and afterwards we sat around and talked for a while.  About 9pm he put the 3 year old in the back seat, his wife holding the baby and they left for home.  About two miles from my home in a 30 MPH area they were hit head on by a jerk that had just been thrown out of a bar for being drunk, Charlotte and the baby were killed instantly, my friend had a broken back, both legs and one arm as well as internal injuries, he survived after almost a year in the hospital.  He was in such bad shape that he didn’t even know of his wife’s death until about six months later.  The three year old in the back seat didn’t have a scratch on him.

As I said, this was several years ago, my friend was driving a new Corvair, the drunk was driving a 1951 Mercury.  The Corvair looked like a sardine can that had been run over by a steam roller.

It seems most people just don't have any consideration for small cars and motorcycles.

A bunch of yrs ago was sitting at a stop light, about the third vehicle back. I had a 54 ford P/U with a steel step up barden bumper in the back. A gal in a little plastic car hit me at about 40 mph. The car behind her was a Cal Hiway Patrolman. The impact totally folded up the fron of her car. I was O.K, and jumped out of the p/u to see how she was. The patrolman had stopped and backed up (he was in the other lane) and turned all his lights on and ws out of his car and running up to her car. We both go there about the same time. She had a seat belt on and the airbag had deployed. Officer asked her if she was ok. A little disorentated but o.k. Officer  looked at the back of my truck and said I think she scratched the bumper a little. Called a tow for her totaled car and got out his ticket book and proceeded to write her a ticket. The gal said " I just dont know what Iam going to tell my husband" Without ever looking up from the ticket he was writeing, he told her "you might tell him you were speeding and hit a truck waiting at a red light.

My point was, as RB stated, a car is not the cause of injury.
Little cars, my big ol SUV, operated improperly is not the culprit. I proved that a couple of years ago when I ran a red light so I could change colors.
It is caused by a driver operating it improperly.
Cars have come a long way in providing safety in a crash.
BUT, you can't protect/stop/ make a law, that will stop crashes.

People make all kinds of excuses for driving gas hogs.  God keeps me safe.  It doesn't matter what I'm driving.  When it's my time to go I will.

I have stayed safe all these years by just not driving faster than I am willing to hit something!

But there is no shortages of idiots on the road ways this past week.  The insurance companys must be making a killing and I bet their monthly premium must be in the same neighborhood as thier morgage payment.

Good philosophy, I said much the same thing when I used to ride the Harley's, only no faster than I wanted to slide down the road on my behind or back!

I don't think there has ever been a driver on the road, that didn't make a mistake that could cost them their lives. (Idiot's?) Perhaps, or just careless at a given time.

We lost our precious daughter last June in an accident. She crossed the line at  a bad corner, and sideswiped another car. The small car she was driving rolled many times and the top was crushed.

She died on the scene.

I thank "God" all others in her car and the driver of the other car made it with only minor injuries.

There have been numerous accidents at that corner, and since the accident that took her life, the state has placed additional signs at that curve warning of the danger.

"No doubt" big auto's are safer to drive than some of these four wheel motorcycles on the road today, but
with more cars on the road, more people will be involved in fatal wrecks, regardless of what they are driving.

True!  except you generally do not ride your bike on an interstate at 70 mph or more.

here are some stats and tables to look at - go from small cars to bigger cars

You know in the early sixties we watched some gruesome movies in Drivers ed. Decapitations and the like!
It might be a good idea that some of those movies would be shown to young drivers today, although I'm sure that it is not politically correct to do so! So many young die due to a moments carelessness!

nw_hunter, I am saddened by your story, I live in fear that one of my young adults(7 all grown) will suffer that same fate. It is a call that you never want to get I'm sure. You have my sincere condolences!
