Romanian PSL trigger question
« on: April 25, 2009, 04:51:46 AM »
I recently acquired a Romanian PSL in 7.62x54R. I'm reasonably satisfied with this new toy except for the trigger. I don't expect match grade triggers on any semi-auto, much less a military type but I've seen better triggers on a Daisy BB gun. It is long, heavy, creepy and gritty. I'm sure I could lighten it and remove some of the creep and grit, get it down to a decent military style two stage pull if I could just get to it. I don't understand the trick to removing the pivot pin. Since it rotates in the receiver and if held from rotating the trigger will rotate on the pin, it seems there must be some unseen catch holding it in place. It is an AK based design so likely it would dismantle in the same way. Can anyone clue me in as to how to remove the trigger pivot pin?

Thanks but no, not at all, that only goes to basic field stripping, I've already gotten that far, but thanks for the effort.
I did find what I needed on this site.http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/fcgremoval3.htm

While filing up the trigger I found both trigger and hammer to be dead soft, a file cut it like brass, so I doubted my trigger job would hold. So after getting if where I wanted I fired up the torch and case hardened both parts. The pull weight is now about 4 1/2 pounds, still with a lot of creep but at least it is smooth creep, more like a military two stage trigger.
After finally figuring out the scope and its' exceptionally coarse adjustments I decided I was ready to move out to 100 yards, after firing about 100 rounds at 50 yards over the past week. My best groups of the day were a two way tie at 1.7". The 150 grain Hornady .312" bullet over 46.0 grains RL-15 went 2891 fps average for five and the same bullet over 48.0 grains of H-414 went 2758 fps. The RL-15 load is about where I want to be but I think I can come up a couple of grains with the H-414. With all the loads I've tried so far this rifle is giving me about 200 fps over what the books show, or to put it another way, I'm getting listed velocities with two or three grains less powder.

Keep me posted on accuracy. I have alsways wanted a Druganov or a clone. I want to get one before the Obama hype drives prices through the roof. I am skeptical about accuracy potential as most ammo is surplus ball. Since you are handloading, I find it interesting that you may wring you true potential.

I read an article about the sniper ammo made for this gun, with a rear hollow core. It was supposed to be very accurate in these weapons. Never came accross the ammo for sale anywhere though.

All ammo, and especially the cheap surplus, is in short supply right now. I did get a 440 round tin of Czech silver tip 147 grain steel cased military ammo from SOG. It was twenty dollars over the price listed in their latest catalog which had just arrived. They also had some Bulgarian steel cased ammo for a bit less. But that was nearly a month ago and I don't know if they still have any at all.

I am in the process of ordering a PSL from AIM and at the lowest found $. I recently bought a 1943 Mosin-Nagant and both shoot the same caliber round. Do not go over the recommended max of 155gr bullet for the PSL as it will not handle heavier rounds and will eventually damage the rifle. I bought 800rnds of the 147gr FMJ from the 80"s from AIM as well for $158+sh. As far as a better trigger, there is a new trigger kit you can put in it.....I can't seem to find it @ this time, but will keep searching for it and post here.

EDIT: http://www.onesourcetactical.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1059 here is the REDSTAR adjustable replacement.
This is the G2 single hook replacement  http://www.redstararms.com/index.htm?944.htm&1  hope this helps and good luck!

It sounds like you may have made great progress.  None-the-less, I would like to offer an interesting solution to improving triggers that I learned off the internet.  It is called TS-70 molly paste.  A little jar of it will last you and all your friends a life time.
http://www.tsmoly.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_7&products_id=84

Molly will actually plate itself into micro fissures in the metal and provide you over time with a smoother surface.  I have used this stuff on lots of mil-surp triggers and handgun slides.  After a while, with repeated use, it really makes a difference.  For what is really happening you might view the following.....http://www.tsmoly.com/faqs.html

Thanks for the link. I have indeed found that any grease, even automotive, will make a very noticable difference versus dry or oiled surfaces. The molly paste sounds like it would be a lasting improvement. I have no doubt the Red Star trigger would be a great improvement but don't consider the PSL to be a rifle worth spending money on, I've done about all I intend to do with it.
