Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 454?
« on: September 12, 2003, 01:19:53 PM »
Hello everyone!  I'm new to the Forums.  Just a simple 1st timers question...does any think/know if Ruger will introduce the S.B.H in 454?  After all, they surprised everyone with the 45LC and 41.  What's next for the Hunter Line?

I've heard rumor that Hornady is testing out a 480 Ruger single action. I don't remember which style but I hope its a Bisley.

Good luck and be safe,
Scott

At one time they said lots of stress on the gun (I know custom makers make it and it is proven) but that is why they came out with the 454 on th eSRH.  I believe they were testing a new single action with a combo bisley\standard grip at one time.  This was rumor before the SRH was introduced in the 480 Ruger.  The more letters they get the more like to build one.

If Ruger made it I would buy it. I would get rid of my SRH and 629. UH, on second thought maybe not. :)

The Hunter is now made in .45 Colt so who needs a .454? A properly loaded .45 Colt (32,000 psi) will kill anything that a .454 will without all of the recoil and blast that goes along with it.

I picked up my 45 Hunter yesterday.   It's awsome!  almost too pretty to shoot.  It's more than likely now that it's .41 mag counterpart may follow in Dec/Jan.

I put my order in today for the 45 hunter now I sit and wait.  While I'm waiting,  Can you really bump your loads up to 32,000 psi?  Flipping through reloading manuals I see a huge range of max pressures from the different companies for the Ruger/TC Only specs.  Most are in the range of 15,000 to 25,000 psi.

Some componants that I have on hand are:
HS-6 and AA#5
230 gr XTP
240 gr Sierra JHC

What I came up with is 13.0gr of AA#5 with the Sierra 240gr JHC which should get me around 1100 fps at 18,400 psi.  I will be using this load on deer at ranges under 75 yards.  Do you guys think that this load will be sufficient?  I am not opposed to going out and buying more componants,  I thought I might as well use up what I already have.  Any suggestions?

Came123,

I'd suggest that you read "Dissolving the Myth, Discovering the Potential" by John Linebaugh.  Some good info there, and he's blown up enough guns that he ought to know what he's talking about!

I'd generally agree with that, not much is going to survive a hit from a 325 @ 1,300+ or a 350gr @ 1,200+ which can be done from a 5.5" Bisley.

I'd still like to see a 5 shot 454 single action from Ruger though, sometimes it's fun to play around with the bigger loads even if you don't really need them.

If they ever do decide to make one, it may just be one of those myths, like the Ruger Gold Label SXS shotgun that I have yet to see in any gunstores.
The intruder turns around slowly, sees both barrels, and hears a low-deep voice say "Son, the left one's iron and the right one's steel, if the left one don't get you, the right one will"

The BFR revolver comes in a five shot .45 Colt and the frame is made by Ruger. I suspect most of the other parts are too. You can load it up and make fireballs come out of the barrel just like a Casull and save a pile of money in the initial investment and not have to buy Casull brass.

I asked Magnum Research directly about this, according to them the BFR's are made in Minnesota by a local manufacturing contractor, not Ruger.

They are assembled by a different manufacturer but the frames are indeed cast by Ruger. If you look at them closely you can see the resemblance to the Blackhawk. There was an article on the BFR not too long ago and in the article it was mentioned that Ruger builds the frames.

I was considering getting a 454 so I called Ruger to see if they were going to make one.  They informed me they had thought about it, but had decided agenest it.  They did not say why.
