What type of cast bullets are you using for handgun hunting?
« on: April 26, 2009, 05:17:50 AM »
I am looking for a good hard cast bullet for deer and hog hunting for the 45LC, 454, 460 S&W, 44MAG and .357 MAX. Could ya recommend a couple of effective bullets and a good suppliers of the bullets. From my reading here you don't need to have the cast rounds running at massive FPS.

Thanks

When I hunt with cast lead bullets I like the LBT styles best. I get mine from LEADHEAD or Cast Performance, but there are several others. Many use and like Montana Bullet Works or Beartooth.

In my 45 lc I have used the traditional cowboy type, round nose flat point 250 grain bullets. Deadly on deer in my experience.
These bullets are common and relatively inexpensive.

All of my handguns for hunting are using bullets from Montana Bullet Works.

I cast my own also using Veral Smith designs mostly with gas checks, I use a 180gr LFNGC in .357 and a 240gr WFNGC in the .44s.
Cast performance makes a good LBT style buillet and I like laser cast also. 8)

In my .357 maximums I use a 180 gr hard cast at 2000FPS useing IMR 4227 AA 1680 will almost duplicate it and you can get it surplus which is much cheaper. (2000FPS is from a rifle barrel)

I've used the LBT, LFNGC in 200gr for deer with both my DW and Contender in 357max with excellent results and great accuracy out to 150yds.

LBT - LFNGC 275gr .454 in my Casull.  Never was able to recover a bullet, and in 41 kills it never took a 2nd shot.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

I use Lee's 255 grain RNFP and have never been disappointed.  If I had a Keith mould I'd use that but have never felt at a disadvantage using the Lee design.  With a 0.320" meplat it gives a lot of splat on the deer or hog.  Granted, it doesn't have the cutting edge of a Keith bullet but does a good job when it hits something warm and hairy.

Thanks for all the good information on the cast bullets, I have never shot them out of my TC and been looking at using cast for hunting VS jacketed bullet that you need to run faster to expand.

Thanks
