i was wondering if the .308 ultra hunter was up to the task, the stats seem like it. what do they shoot at 100yds? what kind of factory ammo shoots well[ i know i know, the reload kit will come soon after i get the rifle} ? i will pillar bed and float if and when i get it.

Welcome!  ;) Since you indicate you haven't got the rifle yet, if you're looking for the best 308 H&R for that task, I'd choose the 308 Survivor which has a bull barrel, here's a previous thread by GeorgiaDave on his 308 Handi which has the same barrel as the Ultra Hunter, not 1000yds, but a good read.  ;)

thanks very nice read and i will look into the survivor in really hoping i can get one to shoot sub moa. i think i have all the tricks down: pillar bedding, floating cleaning the slop on the action.  im currently jus waiting for my mosin, cva muzzle loader, and my auto knife collection to sell to fund the project.

Hello from Georgia,

While I have not yet shot my 308 Ultra at 1000 yards, I have shot it at 500 yards and regularly shoot it at 300 yards. I have found that mine really likes the Hornady SST 165 gr. bullets the best. I load them in Match brass, with Federal Match primers and hand weigh each charge of Varget powder. This is some time consuming reloading, but when you get the type of results that it provides, it makes all the time well worth it. I recently had an issue with cases sticking since I have shot this rifle over 1000 rounds now, and most are right at max load. I simply polished the chamber really well, and am now back in unsticking business. I have come to really LOVE this gun. It is as predictable as any I have ever owned. You simply put the Mueller Mil Dot in the appropriate position and gently squeeze, and almost like magic, the bullet tracks the target and provides yet another strike. Man you have to love it !! I feel that this rifle really does display one of the best indicators of a genuinely accurate rifle. That is the fact that almost anyone with good eyesight, and general knowledge of shooting can take this rifle and immediately begin hitting the 300 yard target. Not just once, but over and over and over !! I have many good rifles. Bolt action, auto loaders, pump and lever guns, but for simplicity, and confidence, just give me my Ol' Ugly boat paddle exposed  hammer single shot rifle and watch the target get SMOKED !!! Good luck with your rifle. Try the 165 SSTs and let us know how it works out. God Bless !

See if you can even find factory 308 ammo first.  The only 308 left on the shelves around here is the $50 a box federal premium barnes loads.  New 308 brass is also getting harder to find for reasonable prices.

This is promising news.  I have always felt that the handis were capable of shooting long distances if the shooter got to know the weapon well. I have became quite fond of single shot/ break barrel rifles for a number of reasons.  And while they are a liitle more finfiky than their bolt actions cousins, they are still shooters in the right hands with the knowledge needed to make them work.

I have a standard barrel .223 and for the first year and a half, it gave me the blues.  I finally got it working right though and am doing quite well at 300yds with a mounted bipod.  I plan on getting a 7mm-08 this summer for the longer ranges.
It's all a hot mess...........

Shooting at 1000 yards is an experience that will huble you, quickly!

My friend owns a custom 6.5x284 built off a howa action.  The gun is capable of shooting in the .2's @ 100 yards.
We set up a very stable shooting bench.  Had a clear field of fire across a beanfield to the 1000 yard target.

The best group we managed all day was about a 16" 5 shot group.  The wind was blowing one way where we were shooting and the opposite direction down by the target.  Really crazy stuff happens to the elements and bullet drop/drift past the 5/600 mark.

But don't let this discourage you.  Give it a try and have fun.  If you can get your handi to hit that 1000 yard target consistantly then you'll definately have bragging rights on here ;)
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."
