Nice SW Radio ~ The Kaito KA 1102
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:51:30 AM »
KA 1102 SW Radio
Small but lots of nice features

Comes with earbud headset, 23' external antenna, AC Adapter, 3 Recharable Batteries, Internal Battery Charger, Backlight Display, great FM stereo sound thru earbuds, 3 Bands ~  FM ~ AM ~ SW with Single Sideband.  Clock is 12/24 hr, your choice.   Alarm w/Sleep settings.

I've had mine for about a week, but just now getting around to hooking it up.   Placed the batteries in the radio ~ they were dead ~  Set the mode for charge and for 5 hours charging time.   Next morning batteries were fully charged.   Set the clock for 24 hour time, then checked it with the Universal Time on SW Band.

At night I can set the backlight to stay on (closely read instructions to do this).  If you set the radio on a shelf at eye level, and above,  you can read the large LCD frequencies easily.  Seems to be a blind spot when looking down at the screen.  Attaching the external antenna does improve SW listening, does not affect AM however, haven't checked FM because reception was excellent.

On Short Wave last night, there was some weird news.   According to this report:   The U.S. has been warned sometime after 2007 to prepare for a deadly epidemic this year of  the Swine Flu Virus.   Instructions are to prepare areas for human mass burials near high metropolitan centers.   Chicago and Alabama were two areas that I was able to understand where preparation has been underway.    FEMA also was mentioned as to ordering mass production of plastic bubble  (6) person caskets for this undertaking.

I don't know Graybeard.   It was on 8.125MHz as best I can remember late last night.   Being new to this radio I was scanning thru channels with only the extended antenna and reception was fading in and out.

Got up this a.m. and told the wife about it, and she said the local news has been mentioning small outbreaks of it in Mexico.   I asked my son about it this evening, as he is an XRay Tech in a local Clinic here.   He said there hasn't been any real concern as at this time it seems to be easily treated.   So what I heard could have been a bunch of propaganda.

Saturday Morning; tuned the Kaito into Single Side Band and picked up a Ham ragchew from down in Texas.   Some of the Hams were near Dallas.   It was interesting.   As the roundtable discussion continued, more hams joined in announcing their callsigns, and were readily recognized and welcomed by those already present.  Their conversations gave me time to adjust my Sideband Receiver and before long I had it figured out and was receiving them loud and clear.   Their discussion led from one topic to another with laughs and quips in between.   After awhile some of them had things to do and began signing off one by one, until only the diehards were left.  It was an interesting morning.
