1st Cannon project
« on: April 27, 2009, 12:42:53 PM »
Just finished up my 1st cannon project. I have been building modern guns for more than a few years now but this is my first bigger than a rifle black powder project. 1/3 scale civil war cannon, tube has a steel liner and 1 x 18 inch bore, Carriage is red oak and mild steel. Fabed all but the tube and wheels and the wife thinks it looks good in the living room. firring report to follow...

GREAT first post/pictures!   ;D   (WELCOME to the board)

Why did you pick the cannon?  (Just curious, it wasn't a beginner's project by any means!)

To answer Cat Whisperer's question, I recieved the tube in trade for another gun, I have always wonted to do one of thees and the time was right. I have been building other types of guns,  mostly semi auto beltfeds for years, but no black powder. here is a pic of an FN-30, Colt Model 1928 Browning and a Vickers that I finished in semi-auto.

Took it out to shoot today, and it was just plain fun, used 100 then 150gr on FFg and 850gr steel balls, ignited with some of boom boom's friction pirmers for starters. Have to get aiming down but still managed to hit the berm. ;D......Will have to learn how to post a vid.

Man I wish I could, I am on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and the airlines would probably charge for 2 or 3 extra seats to bring the gun and powder!

I drove to and from DC area several times...freeway all the way except the last 30 miles. Speed limit on the last 30 miles is higher than most of the freeway east of the Mississippi.
