Hate to do this; but facts is facts.
« on: April 28, 2009, 04:41:37 PM »
I took one look at the Springfield XDM and fell in lust.
Pricey at 700 bucks but a little dickering got it down to $650 OTD.
I chose the 9mm with purpose.
Why?
Because I can still afford to shoot a LOT of 9mm ammo that's why.
I can/have/do reload for everything I shoot, but if I did reload for everything I'd have little time to shoot!
So I still buy 9's when the price is right, plus when Walmart still had the stuff every week I'd buy two or more boxes of Rem. 100 pack h.p. at 23 bucks, and 50 pack Win. FMJ at $8.89.
Before I knew it I had over 1000 rounds of nines and NO GUN TO SHOOT! Yup.
Just bought ammo 'cause a 9 would come my way sooner or later.
I also stocked up on my favorite two other calibers; the bulk packs of 22 l.r. and .45 a.c.p., the 230 grn h.p. load at 15 bucks box/50.
Got near a K of those too.
And I DO have a H&K USP, in .45, certainly one of the finest handguns out there.
She delivers 2 to 2.5 inches at 25 yards ALWAYS, the controls fit me big paws perfectly and I love that big phat boolit.
Stopped by a gun shop. Spotted a Sig P6, made in W. Germany, police trade in, fired little, worn a lot.
Not my 1st ever 9 by any means but a darned good if rough looking gun.
I've put a LOT of rounds downrange 115/124/and 147 grainers and they all shoot plenty good.
I have a target showing 6 147 UMC flatpoints inside 1.5 inches at 25 from the bench.
Well it's a Sig ya know.
Good gun ya know.
2nd 9 is/was, the XDM.
Wonderful trigger, good controls, nice looking sights, handsome gun.
Shot 14 inches high from the bench, 4 inches right, and "grouped" about 7 inches. >:( >:(
I tried EVERY major brand of ammo, including some so called 9mm accuracy loads but to no avail.
I called Springfield. They said "send it back and we'll return your cost for shipping".
??? Huh? Because they have to be airmailed the same day you take them to UPS!
They had my gun 11 weeks.
ELEVEN WEEKS I did without my $650 wondernine.
However I did get real good with frugly Sig.
I finally called S.A. and they siad they were having trouble getting it to shoot low enough! Huh? Don't they make the sights too? Don't they make adjustables?
Weeks more went by, I got the gun with a letter explaining the gun was going to shoot a "little" high still as the next size sight would make it shoot low.
A "little high" turned out to be 5 to 6 inches!
I called an old chum and explained I was having an off day, had a new XDM, would he shoot three major brands of ammo through it and determine which shot best.
He shot 6 inches high with groups around 8 inches with all ammo, PMC, Win and Rem.
He suggested in language I can't use here to get rid of the JUNK!
I did too.
I bought a Smith M&P, full size and promptly put 6 shots into 3 inches at 25 yards. ( $475 and tax)
147 UMC did better with 6 into 2 inches.
This one shoots about two inches high but not enough to miss a gobblin.
The Smith seems to have stolen everything from Glock. It works and works well.
The Smith and my Sig are my two "go to" guns.
(among many others, you know how we are)
It's been near 3 months now and I have yet to see my postage for the airfreight of $67.09.
Springfield took me pretty good I'd say.
So if you are looking for a new handgun my suggestion would be to look AWAY from Springfield.
I seldom knock a product but this one deserves knocking and more.
All the gun really needed was a slightly higher front blade.
I have no idea why it would not group.
S.A. claims they gauruntee 3 inches at 25 from the bench.
I would have pushed for a new P.O.S. but look at what the first one cost me in just ammo and shipping.
Curious about something else too.
Why call the P.O.S. gun Xtreme Duty Match????????
My $350 worn out Sig would easily outshoot the S.A. the new Smith M&N easily outshoots it.

I know what you mean about the H&K, my son bought one and we took it out to the range with some Wally world ammo and proceeded to destroy the inner circle of the targets.  I was a little apprensive of plastic guns, even though the upper is metal, but it made a believer out of me.  Thanks for the Springfield review, I had looked at a couple, now I'll stay away from them.

Hi old friend. Glad to see you're still kicking and hanging around with the rest of the old phatts.

Thanks for the information.  I think we all should report on our experiences with products, both good AND bad so we can make a more informed decision before buying.

It seems like a lack of quality control and poor customer service are running rampant in the gun industry.  I think a lot of it is because manufacturers are trying to push as many guns out the door as they can to try and meet demand (and make money!), hence quality control is being "relaxed" to keep the flow going.  And then their quality control departments are being overwhelmed trying to fix guns that should never have left the factory.

The only way it will change is if we speak with our wallets and buy only from companies who give us a good value product and good customer service after the sale.

Ahmen to that.
We have a universal voice that reaches around the world at no charge.
It's called the internet.
We all need to speak up and be heard, like you suggested, on both the good and bad experiences with products we buy with our hard earned money.
Not just firearms either. Most of us have other outdoors interests and have been "lemonized" somewhere along the line.
Like a lot of us I try to shop wisely and stretch a dollar when I can.
I shop Walmart and you really have to be careful there because they sell a LOT of Chinese junk.
I bought one of those 2 Mil candle power rechragable hand held lanterns and it went sour in days. Took it back ( I hate taking stuff back) and showed the manager the obvious broken wire you could see thru the plastic package.
He was a good guy, gave me a new one right away.
It too was broken, never worked at all.
Back to the store for #3, I fixed the short wire with a soldered joint and the bulb blew two days later!
Back for #4 and a complaint to Walmarts buyers.
Didn't here a thing for weeks. #4 is still working.
I got a call from the CEO of Brinkman here at home.
He apologized so much I almost felt sorry for him.
Since #4 ws still working and I gave him a run down on what was wrong in the first place he said he would have his R&D department on it right away.
A month later I got the dandiest Marine 3 mil rechargable for my boat.
The note inside said the wiring defect resulted in a recall, they now use heavier gauge wiring and better connectors.
The Marine light is worth 3 X what I paid for the other lights.
I mentioned to the CEO that I like to shoot coyotes at night but could find no red lenses to fit anyones lights.
He sent me TWO of them for the lights I'd been buying. Snaps on and off. Now the red lens is part of the package!
Best not to be a butt head about defective products unless they back you into a corner.
Then you'll know what to do. ;D

I can appreciate Jeager's bad experience with poor customer service, but that doesn't  necessarily make the XDM a poor pistol. I have two XDM9's and one M&P 9 and they all shoot just fine. I am still evaluating the XDm's, but they both easily group in 4 inches off the bench at 15-20 yards with my 69 year old eyes. I am quite certain a younger and better shooter could do better.

I have owned Glocks and prefer my current striker fired guns. I like striker fired guns for defensive purposes due the simplicity of use, consistent trigger and mag capacity. If I want a more accurate, longer range firearm I use revolvers.

Don't have the XDM.  The XD-9 I took to an NRA Law Enforcement Instructor's school shot 2.5 inches at 25 yards with all brands of ammo tried.  And to point of aim.

i know alot of people brag on the xds and this will probably raise some responses but ive handle and shot 4 of them quite a bit and they sure dont impress me. They seem to either shoot well but not run well or run well and shoot like crap. If it were just one gun id say maybe it was a dud but 4 that are bad out of 4 ive tried sorry but i sure wouldnt spend money on one. A sig isnt much more and if you look around its pretty easy to find sig police trade ins that are cheaper then a new springfield. I detest glocks but have to admitt there a reliable accurate gun and id trust my life to one as i would a sig or h&k. A springfield, no thanks. If your going to come back and say your springfield never misses a beat please also tell me youve shot over a thousand rounds through it. Any gun can shoot a box of ammo without missing a beat and then let you down later.

Never owned an XD. I've shot a few that ran and shot ok for the limited rounds I put thru them. The IDPA shooters that have them speak highly of them, and I don't recall seeing but one with function problems. The XDs didn't do anything for me that the Glocks didn't do better, so doubt that I'll ever own one. It took a while for me to appreciate the Glocks after being introduced to them on the job. None of the polymer pistols warm my heart, but like Lloyd, I have learned to appreciate the Glock for it's performance, and now they are my "Go To" pistol. Sorry the OP had so much trouble with his XD, lots of folks seem to like them.

Interesting post.

I found my Glock 19 shot a bit tighter groups than my S&W 3913TSW. I gave the Glock to my father and he really likes it. I never shot a XD, but those with them at the club seem to sing their virtue.

IME the XD took more trigger time whether dry firing or shooting to smooth out and feel good than the Glocks or M&P. I think they all work OK.
