IMR 4350 vs H4350
« on: April 29, 2009, 08:48:41 AM »
I see that several powders have similar numbers and similar applications and loads. How are they different?
What is diferent between H4350 and IMR4350, for example?

These are very similar, but not interchangeable, powders.  This question comes up from time to time, but ALWAYS refer to the repective manufacturers recommendations.  Especially since these powders are commonly used in big thumper type guns (7mm Mag, etc).

Ditto what skarke said.  They are very similar, but not exactly the same.  Here is a good article that helps explain in greater detail.

To fire an accurate shot means to not just hit the target, but to know where the target was hit before the bullet got there.

The manufacturor is different.

IMR 4350 is made by DuPont.
H4350 is made by Hodgdon.
AA4350 is made by Accurate Arms.

All different.  All are manufacturor attempts at duplicating the original military 4350 powder.  Not exactly the same....close....but not close enough to interchange.  You can use one in place of another, but you do HAVE to follow the book suggestion for starting loads and work you way up to your load.  You cannot interchange them.

I have some original surplus Military powder.  Not H and not IMR.  I have to use 2.0-2.5 grains more of this powder to get up to velocities I had with H.   If you were to go in reverse order and try to relace the Military powder with same charge of H or IMR powder, you would be 2.0-2.5 grains above a book load.  You can see how disasterous this could become.

Chevrolet and GMC.  Ford and Mercury.  Models can be close, but very different.

Don't know about 4350 data BUT I have a book that states Don't interchange data for IMR-4831 and H-4831 as IMR is alot faster burning rate. To confuse you further they state that IMR-4895 and H-4895 is very, very simlar in burning rates.

Powder is powder...I just get a can, dump it in and go shoot.  NOT!  Good way to blow up your gun and yourself.  Get a good manual and follow it, and attempt to use the same brand of powder.
