Another wonderful day in Paradise
« on: April 30, 2009, 07:08:38 AM »
74 degrees yesterday, and same expected today.  Snow melting fast.  All snow gone off roof, still 12 to 18 inches in the shaded parts of the yard.  Driveway drying out, but big hole in road going out of subdivision.  Had to use 4-wheel drive to get home last night with big truck, towed wife and son in cars through mud.  Tanana River has several ice dams, flooding Salcha homes again.  Chatanika River also flooding due to ice dams.  This warm temperatures is really playing havoc with the rivers.

Leaving in about five minutes to drive the Steese Highway, looking for bear tracks on the hills.  It's that time of the year again.  Taking the 06 hoping to get in range of a bear.  Not picky will take Black or Grizz, anything I can get close enough to.  Shot two beaver yesterday under removal permit.  used a .22rf with shorts.  Head shots did good.  Gosh those things are hard to skin, not like muskrats where you can just rip the skin off.  With Beaver it's cut cut all the way.  If I could ever figure out how to post pictures I'd show us skinning those big boys.  I'll let them settle down for a day or two then go back and shoot some more.  Have targeted about 15 for removal.

Have a nice day guys, will let you know how the drive today goes.

Heh. Some of us at work were laughing about how the Secret Service would have really hated (heheheh) being body guards to Palin's family here in Alaska.

"Ohhhh, such hardship." LOL

I'm back!

Chilachuck:  According to Todd Palin, the Secret Service guys that had to shadow him claimed it was like taking a vacation.  Todd races Arctic Cat snow mobiles.  Arctic Cat had planned a trip for him to the factory to discuss how the machine handled and performed during the Iron Dog race.  The Secret Service guys loved the tour of the factory.  Then Todd went to things like Football games, Hockey games, and all kinds of sporting events, which is what he does, thats his lifestyle.  Sara, does the same things when she can find the time.  Just think how the Secret Service would have felt going with the family on their annual Moose hunt, and their annual fishing trip to stock the family freezer.  They would have to upgrade from those Baretta 9MMs to some real guns, like a .44 mag or a .454 Casull, maybe even a .460 S&W.

Got back this evening.  Still lots of snow up in the hills.  With all this warm weather the spring melt is coming fast.  All the creeks and rivers are flooded out of their banks.  Water was running across the highway in two places.  Two other places the water was undercutting the highway.  I notified DOT, but if they don't do something by tonight it will be too late.  The water had washed about one third of the roadbed away in both places.  Saw huge blocks of ice the size of an average house floating down the river.

Saw several foxes, a few beaver out on the banks, and a few Moose climbing the hills.  There was some Caribou up near Eagle Summit, up on the ridges where the snow was blown off.  Did not see any bear sign, guess it's still too early yet.  Went up a couple of side roads that go over ridges and into valleys and drainages, but got turned around by huge snow drifts still across the trails.  Shot and ate a grouse last night for dinner.  Caught a couple of Trout for breakfast this morning in a small lake.  Got visited by Fish & Game Enforcement Officers.  They thought I was putting in Bear Bait, and they wanted to mark my bait station with a GPS.  Disappointed them

Yeah, I heard what the Secret Service thought of shadowing Todd. The worst part of body guarding the Palins in Alaska would be not being able to hold a fishing pole while on duty. (And coming up with a legit sounding reason to believe a caribou at 300 yards posed a threat and just had to be shot.)

No matter what they thought of Sarah for that office (and there's some legit complaints about her) they had to feel a bit of disappointment at her not getting elected.

From what you guys are talking about, your winters aren't much worse than ours.  We just went through Spring breakup a week or so ago, and it's never fun.  The thing that would really depress me would be your short to nonexistant winter days.  I"m a morning person, frequently up at 3:30 or 4 a.m.  During the winter, I hate waiting for daylight; usually 3 or four hours after I'm up.  Our best shooting time is at sunrise, after that the wind usually picks up.

Cheers from Da U.P.

Pete

We've got moose, black bear and wolves, but the griz and caribou are real lean right now.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.
