357 max on sb1 frame

Question, Will the sb1 frame hold up to the 357 max at full power? Should you use a sb2 frame if you wanted to ream the 357 to the 357 max?

Good question. I asked it last week.....lol. I have 5 SB2 receiver's to try though and will prob shoot many, many more 38 special plinking loads than full boat 357 maxes.

You're prob right about shooting more Specials. I have just shy of 1000 +P cases left from my old pistol league days. Glad I kept them waiting clean in a bag. Now if I just had a barrel.

I think a lot will depend on what primers you use, Bobby reamed his SB1 357mag to Max and it works fine, on the other hand, 5yrs ago I tried a 357Max barrel on an SB1 frame using factory Dan Wesson ammo and got perforated primers, so use caution and watch for problems, probably wouldn't hurt to shoot it remotely the first time as Dieselbuilder did, see the FAQs for the link on what can happen when a high pressure barrel is used on an SB1 frame, while his was a 223 barrel, the Max still has a SAAMI MAP of 40kpsi, some serious pressure just inches from your face.

I am very pleased with the accuracy of my Max on the sb1 frame.  I had a little trouble with headspacing, (misfires) don't know if I goofed when I reamed it and cut the rim to deep or if it came from the factory that way.  Quick and Larry provided the cure.........machined the extractor down a little and put a small spring under it to hold the brass against the breech and all is well.

I have gotten fairly close to max loads with no problems developing, so for me it was the thing to do.  It just seemed like to me if the sb1 could handle the pressures of the 30/30 it would do ok with the maxi.  Just my opinion.
