Hi Ya'll
Well it worked for me. I married a pretty young Texan 53 years ago. Told her about how nice Southern Oregon was. Gun Clubs, great hunting and fishing.
Told her how pretty the forests and the mountains were. Said I'd buy a place up in the mountains in the forest. Told her about the deer and turkeys and Elk.
She told me it sounded real good to her. So I've been enjoying fine southern cooking and baking for a long time now. Heck I even let her take her Winchester .270 and shotgun along with her.

Well I'm up late cause "someone" gave me the reds! But now that I have read this thread and "THE D MANS" posts I have laughed and can now go to bed relaxed!

Dee, you are definitely worth the price of admission! By all means don't encourge the migrants!

Ohh! the bugs , the humidity, the hurricaines , the illegals, the swine flu, need I go on!

No danger here. This Yankee wants to move near Hudson's Bay(the kind of place where you fly in). and my Hungarian wife wants to go South. I'll miss her!

The "D Man", I like that. Oldshooter, these Yankees ain't gonna move down here. Their Yankees. Their just trying to shake us up (especially me). They like it up there. They got snow, they got cheese, they got the unions, they got D.C., they got big ole deer, they got Chronic Wasting Disease, they got the Hudson River (can't eat the fish it's polluted), they got Muslim congressmen, man they got it all goin on. It's a Yankee paradise. They boss each other around, and build them privacy fences when they get mad at each other. I'm tellin ya, it's a Yankee friendly environment up there.
It's kinda like ole billy. He has me on ignore, but reads my posts. He won't move down here. He'd have to get his government check re-routed, and by the time the first one found him in the backwoods of East Texas, he'd be skinnier than a wormy coon hound. If he talked to the mail man, he might never get his check.

They sure are, I have ran over a couple. But they also are getting CWD. Those are the ones to hit if you have a choice. Their skinney.

I'm on the opposite side of this discussion. My wife would like to move to northern Florida to be closer to her family that moved down there some decades ago. The land is too flat for me, the seasons don't change, and you have to belong to a hunt club to have land to hunt on. I don't know if I could put up with that, unless I had me a refuge somewhere in the north, maybe central Georgia.

Many northerners who move to the deep South then decide that it is not as nice as they thought it would be, so they move about half-way back. This has been boosting the populations in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. There is even a term for them: halfbacks.

I also married a southern gal. We compromised and moved west--well we didn't really compromise, because there was never any doubt where I was going and there was never any doubt that she would follow me. Of course that was only 44 years ago, so I keep an eye on her in case she gets any funny ideas.

I should have mentioned that I lived in south Florida for almost 30 years.

Minnesota is a fine place to raise a family, and a fine place to live during your working years, but after the kids are gone I'm going to want a lifestyle that allows taking a walk and going fishing most anytime I want, and Minnesota just isn't it. Old people become shut-ins here, and have bad lifestyles compared the the vital active lifestyles of old folks in the south.

I grandmother is in her 70's and she coached a AAA Baseball team, works a full time job, and raises a grandson! Paw Paw is 81 and plants a HUGE garden, works his rental properties, and goes from sunrise to sunset. Yep old folks down here sure are active. Why Mr. and Mrs. Greybeard are more active with their farm and land than most folks my age are!

We moved up here when her folks turned 70 so we could be close to take care of them if need be, and so the kids could be near grandparents and a farm. The activities of old people here are so poor compared to the life styles you give examples of. They just wither away.

If it's not too personal, can I ask whether Paw Paw got into rental properties before, or only after, he retired? I'd like to do that too to get some income, but just don't have the time right now. What kind of properties is he working? Thanks.

Took the family on vacation to Florida a few years back and was sort of discouraged in the end. Florida was supposed to be so beautiful, and the ocean sites were, but the rest of the state seemed like nothing more than a big sinkhole in the middle of a swamp.

My grandfather's story is one of much humor. He worked for Noble sign company his whole life. They would travel around the south putting up signs. Well the way their work fell he would be in the same place for months at a time. He always bought a new single wide trailor and rented a lot for it while they were working. The man had a hang up and refused to live in hotels. He had trailors scattered throughout the south. When he retired he bought him a chunk of land and had 10 of the single wides set in a row across from an old 2 bedroom run down house. He and my grandmother lived in one of the bigger trailors while they fixed up the house. It took them a few years, but when they moved into the house across the way from the trailors he began to rent them out to folks. I don't think he ever aspired to get into the rental business, but what do you do when you live in a small town and own a bunch of 2 bedroom single wides? He has a waiting list of people wanting to rent. They live real close to the school in a nice safe neighborhood. It earns him a little extra money each month and it gives him something to do. You know with old trailors there is always something that needs fixing.

Tell the wife if she wants to move to Flawda she may have to learn how to speak another language. you get much south of Orlando and you start hearing a lot of Spanish. You get down to Dade/Broward county area and you only hear Spanish and NooYawk.

I think with all the inherent problems of relocating to such a backward area as the south is, it wise to simply stay put.
We southerners really aren't that nice on a daily basis.

Heres one yankee you will not have to worry about moving down south. Feb. in Florida on a bass fishing trip, biggest cockroach I've ever seen in the motel I was staying at.Chain link fence to keep the 'gator's from eating your dog. No snow for Christmas time. Plenty of illeagal aliens up here, don't have to go to the mouth of the funnel. Walleye,perch and salmon fishing. Whitetail deer bigger than my german sheperd. Just getting ready to plant the garden, plenty of growing time around here. And in the middle of winter time, wood fire going in the fireplace, and some time to cozy up to the wife. Gosh billy, I was hopin we'd never meet, it has always been one of my goals not to, and I'll be real surprised if that game warden job actually comes thru. Never heard of the Texas Dept of Public Safety or the Park and Wildlife Service assigning areas BEFORE they hire someone. They always get their assignment AFTER they complete training, and they most times DON'T get to pick and choose. Sounds like a pipe dream to me. You have to get accepted to go to the academy FIRST. The State of Texas has NEVER OFFERED GAME WARDEN JOBS. You apply to the State of Texas for acceptance to the Academy, and it is not easy to get accepted. I'll believe it when I see it.

I attended the Ft Benning school for wayward boys way back in the 60's. After the OCS commander threw me out of the program (and took three stripes) I had time to see the countryside and run with some of the local boys asssigned to my unit. I met gracious people willing to share who loved to hunt. Weird for me was going on a rat kill out in semi wooded section. I was armorer in my unit (third Army NCO Academy) and had my own 20 guage winchester in the arms room (yeah it's in the regs). Farmer had a rat hill 30 yds across. Eight shooters went out and farmer set a huge bucket of 4 buck by each of us. We all had to face away form the hill. Landowner put 2 collared ferrets into the hill and we busted the rats going past us for what seemed like forever. Owner had put poison bait grain around the area to get the ones we didn't get. About noon we put away our toys and the man had a whole hog he put into a pit the night before served(ferrets got a big fat rat apiece). I was glad to be invited. Friendly folk with warm and wholesome hospitality. Very, very good pit barbecue too, and as I remember the beer wasn't bad either.

Most of us down South don't really hate Yankees. We hate the ones who carry their Northern attitudes with them when they decide to stay. They fence their whole property. They manage to piss everyone off on the entire block, and they think since they have moved in, all hunting should stop. They think their rules should apply to the entire area, no matter how it has been. I've seen an influx of Yankees coming into our area and building horse farms. They build these things and get their panties in a wad when they hear gun shots. I once had an owner of the property next to mine tell me that I shouldn't allow the running of dogs or hunting with rifles on my place because it was not allowed where he was from. I told him to sell his property because I was not going to change a thing. We don't hate Yankees....We just ain't going to change our ways, and if you can't deal with that, stay where you are.....

Anyone here from north of Amarillo? I'm looking in the Dumas area, probably within a 25 mile radius. If I take the position I have been offered I want to live in a small town. The artheritus is from some old wounds is starting to set in and it will be nice to get away from the cold.
