Raging Bull Cylinder Won't Turn
« on: May 03, 2009, 07:09:12 AM »
I own a Raging Bull in .454 Casull.  Extremely accurate for a big heavy gun.  Can hit soda cans all day out to fifty yards with no problem.

After shooting 5 to 10 .45 Long Colts, the hammer suddenly refuses to come back.  The trigger won't pull back also.  The Cylinder won't turn.  Open the cylinder, clean the notches on the back of the cylinder, clean the carbon off the face around where the lever that turns the cylinder comes out, and oil the lever.  That makes it start working again.

Anyone else experience this problem?

Sourdough, has the extractor backed itself out any?  This can cause a problem in most revolvers under heavy recoil.

;) Sourdough, I have not had that trouble with bigger revolvers, but my old K-22 requires the clyinder face be cleaned fairly often. It that gap is tight, crude builds up there and the clyinder won't turn. It usually doen't happen on Rugers because the gap is pretty big, but the smaller the gap, the better the acc. and speed, so I am told. ;)

No the extractor is tight, that's the first thing I checked.

The tolerances are close between the cylinder and backing face.  Crud does build up there with LC cartridges.

;) Sourdough, I just remembered a friend told me he had a Colt 357 with a very close gap between the cly. and barrel. He said the firing of like 15 rounds very rapidly would case the heat expansion to prohibit the cyl. from turning. ;) :)

Yeah right. Before it gets back to him most likely owning guns in the US will be outlawed. Take it to a local gunsmith don't send it to Taurus.

I honestly can't say I've had it happen but I'd darn sure try to get the cylinder open and out of there and look things over and clean and lube it as it should be. I'm betting that will cure it.

Take a look at the primers on the fired cases.  See if they are backing out, or are "smeared".  I had this problem with certian 357's in a Smith #27.  They were pressing hard enough against the firing pin hole / breach face that they mad it almost impossible to turn the cylinder.  Pressure does not have to be high, sometimes a certian primer is to soft for a certian gun.

That is what I was going to say, check your tollerance at the throat of the cylinder and barrel, then check your primers to see if they are buldging after being fired.  Other alternative if your powder is causing such a fouling build up, is change to a cleaner burning powder.

Mine has done this but only after firing about 40 to 50 shots. Then a good cleaning and she good to go again. Try a better (cleaner) powder.

Check primers & crimps, either can keep it from turning. If these are reloads use the Lee crimping die it's alot better than RCBS, a dentist couldn't pull those bullets!
