Loud Pipes

Why is it necessary to have loud pipes on your Harleys. They sound like an old John deere 730.  I had pulled up to a stop light the other day and 2 harley riders were also stopped. I couldn't even hear my radio had to turn it up.  To me those loud pipes are nothing but a nuisance.  Law enforcement should start stopping those noisy bikes and give them a ticket.

I'm sure you will hear "loud pipes save lives" and they probably do. They got your attention didn't they? They give you a head start on looking for the sound versus using vision only.
I am thinking though, that in 5-10 years there will be a run on hearing aids? I'm not kidding at all, we wear hearing protection for shooting don't we? Engine noise of any kind is notorious for hearing loss. There are a lot of farmers who have hearing problems from running those 730's, etc.

I like skinny wimmins, love the sound of aircraft engines wide open... don't feel the need to try and 'splain that neither...  :-\

Now, you already know what you like and don't like and I'm sure nobody's gonna change your mind so I promise, I won't ask you to 'splain your reason for askin... Other then the obvious venting or desire to start an argument that is...  ;)

Not starting argument.  Why do they need to be so loud. By the way I am hard of hearing. One of these days a nosy bike is going to blow up my hearing aid. Too many tank and artillery rounds going off a little to close for comfort.

I like mine to make some noise. I had straight pipes on my sportsteer. They were a bit much but everyone knew where I was. ;D

The pipes I have on my ultraclassic are a little louder than stock pipes when cruising but have a really nice roar when you rack the throttle.

People often like to draw attention to themselves -weird hair, tattooed arms and sleeveless shirts, ear and body piercings, Mr.T jewelry, skimpy clothing, body builders, and yes - loud exhaust.  Any attention (even negative attention) is sought by those who normally get no attention. 

If I had a bike, I want is to make a little noise also.

I have a playing card clipped to the front fork of my Low Rider...sounds cool clicking against the spokes, drowns out the sound of other drivers with loud radios....lol

Its not nessisary but some people like them. I used to but I think all those years of working around fighter Jets and drag raceing (bikes and cars) and offrading buggies and trucks........ I kinda have grown to like mufflers myself.  More power toyou guys with loud pipes but mine are gonna be alot less nosiy from now on. 8)

Now I gotta find some mufflers to fit my rigid sporty project.

  I dislike 'em too.  From my stand point, I've senced most seem to equate loud and obnoxious with some sort of "cool, tough guy" thing.  Evidently, the noise creates testosterone for many.  Does nothing for me.  No disrespect intended but I'd have little problem calling the cops if a problem persisted on my road with them.  Just because you enjoy them, not everyone does.    Kinda like the punk with the bass rap crap thumping in the car.   A little respect goes a long way.

When I bought my bike, the baffles were not in. I put them in after starting the bike in my garage at 7 am. It was so loud, it sounded like cannons going off. My first thought were my neighbors. My new pipes are a little loud but not extreme.

When I'm sitting at a light, I sometimes lay my hand on the tank to feel the vibration and make sure it hasn't died!!  I'm not a loud pipe fan either but most of the folks I ride with think they are great and have them.  We all seem to get along well enough.

You know whats scary? your sixteen year old who thinks driving a car is so easy they can text at the same time, your wife that is running late for work so she has to put her makeup on in the car, the somali immigrant that thinks that traffic signals are optional. I will always have loud pipes, they may irritate some, but they know i'm there!

  while i dont have huge post numbers on g.b.o., i have been around here for one helluva long time.  i have seen people come, and i have seen people go.  i have my views on stuff, and i could give a hoot in hell if someone doesnt like the way i post, or "the tone" of my posts.   that would be your problem, not mine.  i operate within the rules set forth by graybeard himself, i moderate forums here, i have contributed to keep the site up and running more than once, and i do try to help people the best i can.   if i ruffle a few feathers in the process, too bad.   contribute half has much as i have to the greatest forum on the net, then come whine to me about how i handle myself (unless you are graybeard or matt).   i dont act like anyone here owes me a thing. 
   as far as 'ignore' features go, and how many people ignore me,  i couldnt care less.  it is a reflection on that person being a coward or unable to see opposing views. how boring the world must be if that is the way you live.

I don't ride, and I'm damn glad most bikers prefer loud pipes. If I'm in the truck a biker on the passenger side or close behind is invisible, I'd have killed more than one biker switching lanes in that beast if they'd not have had some way of "announcing" their presence.

With all the semi's, coal trucks, jacked-up F350's and 3500's around here, riding a quiet bike might indicate suicidal tendencies.

Don't have a bike now but I like loud pipes.
Even my 2 year old understands. He goes nuts every time he hears a loud bike go by.

The only thing that gets me around here is you can drive a Harley or diesel with no muffler but
try running a hot rod with straits and the cops are on you like white on rice.

Used to be a performance muffler for hot rods called the "Hush Thrush".  Loved the product, because when you were just cruizin, they were pretty quite, but when you opened up the Holly, man o man, they sounded good.

Does anybody make something like that for a Harley?

I really hope your not pointing any of that at me MM cuz I think your loud pipe are great. My ears don't like them on mine anymore thou. I even wear ear plugs and have mufflers on my drag car thease days.   Getting old kinda blows ya know. ;D
