Am tempted to open mine a tad. Nothin sounds like a 6 with just the right growl.
But I like the quiet most of the time , would like to find the article on the selectable pipe arrangment I saw on U tube. Pull a lever and the exaust would open up , That wing sounded like a porsch with loud pipes or would be quiet as a kitten.

I have always loved loud cars especially the ones with a built engine that has lots of compression. I don't have a Harley, but always wished I did, and I love the sound of loud pipes on a Harley. I think the sound is what sets Harleys apart from any other. A friend of mine has a Fatboy, and before he bought it he had another $10,000 put into the engine. Talk about an awesome sounding bike! I have always thought that, why have a Harley if you can't hear it?

;)  The stock pipes may actually be stock , But with no guts in them.

Use to run my RK with stock pipes and no guts, just a straight 2.00" ID pipe welded in them, and slip in baffles.  Problem is pipes no guts, bike no guts, If I lined up with my buddy who has an Ultra Classic, he got me off the line and all the way up to about 60MPH until I started catching him.  The bike out weighed mine by about 70lbs. and my buddy has another 125lbs. on me.  I went to the Sampson slip-ons and gained my low end torque back, and much quiter.

These 'Harley'  :-\ types don't care how much noise they make, who it bothers or disturbs.  We already knew that before this topic started.

Now now Myron... I don't think S_99 is a muck raker...   :)  He's had me on his ignore list for a lonnnnng time and never even told me off before he did it!   ;D  So for him to come here and make his position known on this subject it must be something he feels stronger about then his dislike for me!   :-\

To each his own... and I like my (loud) Cobra streights as much as he dislikes the... uh, "Harley types!"   ;D

For one I was asked to remove it by someone that goes on here with his kids and found it offensive.

And for two it was just not appropriate and does not follow the "respect for others" spirit that was the condition of having a biker forum in the first place.

Even though it was funny.

I agree with GRIMJIM on this and with a little help from him I can stay around a little longer. The other boards I'm on are more adult oriented and I let that slip out. I have said this before " The first amendment only means that you have to right to say what you can back up or are willing to take a @@$ whoopin for".

Loud pipes or not, I wish like 'ell it would warm up and melt the snow and ice on the roads so I could take a ride. Sittin' on Ol' Paint out in the garage just ain't doing it for me any more.

What this all boils down to,is that there's stupid people and animals everwhere.Train engineers will tell you that no matter how loud they blow there horns, people will still pull out in front of them, along with deer, cow's,dogs. I was told by a friend about his trip to Sturgis a few yrs. back, and 7 bad accidents with the local deer. Maybe these deer were deaf, because there's not a shortage of loud pipes at Sturgis.
I have other friends that tell me that in Denver Co. and surronding areas you will most certainly get a ticket for loud pipes. My truckin buddy's will testify that the DOT will write you up for straight stacks, and make you put mufflers on. Loud exhaust are starting to irratate people, and in a few more yrs. they'll be outlawed.
Dont get me wrong because I like the sound of pipes everynow and then, but not on a long ride behind them. I had Vance and Hines on a 1500 Vulcan for awhile, until I discoverd I was waking up a very ill man that was dying near a road that I rode all the time. He was a very good man,and I sold the Vulcan and bought a quite bike to do my local rideing with.
I don't know if loud pipes save lives or not,but I rely on myself to be alert more now that I'm 68. I'm also a little more grown up now and relize that noise is not that important to me anymore.
For now I'm planning a 1000 mile Iron But ride, anyone want to go with me?    Digger

I agree with that buck. I hope those kids don't go to public school or ride the school bus.  I drove bus for seven years. I have heard and seen a few things that shocked me and that is very hard to do.
