Felt recoil in Tikka T3
« on: May 05, 2009, 10:51:13 AM »
Two years ago I had bought a Tikka Battue in 3006. I liked the gun but the recoil was enough . Last year a friend finally wore me down and offered a New Tikka in 338 F for my 06 , so I traded .

I find the 338F recoil to be quite sharp, more than I expected with full house loads .

Heard one Lad had filled his stock on his 7MM Mag because the light weight Tikka hit him hard

I have a Winchester model 70 in 300 WM and it does not hit meat all, so what is your experiance ?

I didn't used to be recoil sensitive, well hardly at all but the older I get the more I feel the hard kickers.  I had a Tikka T3 Lite chambered in 300WSM that would get my attention when shooting from a bench but in field/hunting positions I didn't even notice it.  My S-I-L shot it a couple times off a bench and won't shoot it anymore because the recoil was completely unacceptable.  My son has this rifle now and he says it is kind of a kicker.  BTW, I sold my Remington Sendero 338RUM because it was too heavy and the recoil was starting to get to me, the guy who bought it was getting it for his 13 Y.O. son....... yikes.

I've had my T3 Lite in 338 WN for nearly a year now. With the scope it weighs 7 pounds and is for me the ideal hunting rifle I can carry all day. Would I want to shoot it all day - absolutely not. That being said, I feel the stock is very well designed and it is more comfortable to shoot than the wood stock (I've switched my hunter stock). Maybe due to the ability to flex a little, even though it is lighter. My advice, get the limbsaver pad and limit your range sessions to say 12 rounds. Also, practice with a lighter caliber in the same rifle with the same trigger pull weight.

+1 on the Limbsaver. My 308 is a T3 Lite, they are light guns. The 308 is not a hard kicker but in such a light rifle, the Limbsaver makes it far more comfortable to shoot.

Holy Hanna! this t3   in the 338 Federal  kicks . It has been two days now since firing off twenty five rounds @ the range over a period of three hours . My mission was to site the rifle in from getting it on paper At fifteen yards to a two inch high zero @ 100 yards .

And the Local gun dealer wanted to sell me a 300 WSM  battue two years ago. I liked the idea of the cartridge ,but not in a 19" barreled T3 Battue? The 06 I had before recoiled enough for my taste, but found it manageable . I am 6' and 200 IBS and thought the smaller case and longer barrel the same gun would   not hit as hard .

Now I have an idea why so many tikka's are returned to our dealer under a year old . I see nothing wrong with  the action, they just kill the shooter in the big calipier .

Yes this gun needs a Limbsaver pad and plan to down load for futher practice .

I think stock design brobably come into pay here too. Too bad Boydt and others are not making replacement stocks for these guns , otherwise I put this gun in wood.

Figure my Winchester weighs in probably chose to eight pounds and the recoil of the 300 Wm in this gun is mild.

I actually spent a good part of this morning at the range. I only brought two rifles, one being my Tikka t-3 300wsm. I was working on a 180 gr accubond load.  68.5 of re 22 was the one and produced a 3 shot group of just a hair under 1/2 inch at 100 yards.  Over about 4 hours, I fired 42 rounds from this rifle. This rifle with a limbsaver installed is actually not unpleasant to shoot.

With that said, a buddy of mine has a 308 t-3 light which I have found to have a sharp recoil with full house 165 grain loads. Of course, he does not have a limbsaver on His. Because of this, I recomend the simbsaver to all of my buddies with a T-3.

I love my T3 in 06. I use a folded towel over my shoulder at the range for all my shooting from the bench. I would use a shoulder pad if I shot a lot from position, as I should, but I don't so I won't. In the field I never feel the shot at all. I don't hear it either.

I am seeing quite a few Tikka's returned to the local gun dealers . I assume people experiance the same problem with recoil, and are trading their rifles in . Guess it is up to us to spread the word . :)

I see in one of the Whole sale catalog 's,  a pad made by SVL  Limbsaver recoil pad  Item 52772  which is the recision fit Recoil pad for Sako 75 synthetic as well as Tikka T3 lite. syn.

Is this what your putting on your Tikka's ?

If not please forward the info
Thanks

Nice picture Tim. I like how you did up the background. I'll also recommend the recoil pad to my son who has a Tikka Lite in 30-06. The recoil doesn't bother him one bit as he is used to shooting his 300 Ultra Mag. Rather, I'll recommend the pad for when I shoot the Tikka Lite. Dang thing kicks way worse on me than my 35 Whelen. ;D

Thanks Skunk, the camies were hanging there, so I put em to good use, the deer hide is left over from my buckskinning days!  ;D

On the Limbsaver part number, dunno about the 52772, but their 10011 is listed for the Sako and Tikka.

Thanks Tim
The 10011 Number  refers back to the 52773 as the item # from the catalog that I am using .

Your referance makes it clear with out a doubt what to order .
Let it be known to tikka owners that this is what to do with these fine rifles .You need not trade the rifle because of heavy recoil.

Thanks.

Have you thought about adding a muzzle brake? That will take a whole bunch of the recoil out of it.

Here is my Lite model in .243....this is my dedicated coyote buster so I also had the barrel knocked down to 16 1/2". It basically has no recoil at all. My 12 yo son shoots it and says it feels like a .22 only louder.

Take care,Stan

I have seen new T3's traded in with the 300 Wn and 300 WSM cals with a muggle brake , so I gather this might not have dealt with recoil as hoped . One friend commented to pack the stock to add some weight , as he had done on his 7MM RM. which I would think would be of help.

I will get out , when ever it stops raining , and as soon as the black flies are gone . It seems we have on or the other or both. No Flies then we have gussing winds .
