I need some advise
« on: May 05, 2009, 12:40:28 PM »
Perhaps DALE or some others with experience replacing windows could offer a tip or two. I'm going to be replacing some windows and need to know an easy way to remove the old windows from a brick veneer house. I've heard of using a recip saw to saw the flange off after removing the interior trim. Seems to me the brick will be a problem since they are over the window flange and the saw blade is going to run into the brick which are tight against the window frame. A guy I know in the window business told me one time that he collapsed them but he didn't explain how he did it. He's retired and gone now so I can't ask him. If it were a frame house or had brick molding I wouldn't be asking this.

To collapse them is the easiest way. You need to tape all the glass panes and break out all the glass. Most times but not always there in enough room to get a Saw Zall blade in there betweem the brick and the framing. If there is enough room cut the flange and frame in several places. Then you just kind of fold it in. Make no mistake about it. It is hard to do and a real pain in the ass. You will also need a crow bar. Hope that helps. Good luck Dale

Thanks, Dale.  Sounds like I need to start lifting weights or something to get back in shape after sitting around all winter. Only trouble is, at my age you don't get in shape, You just get stiff and sore and stay that way.  :'( I have all the tools though. I just need to get up an do it.

Depending on the size of the window it could take well over an hour to remove the old one with the clean up involved. Those are the worst ones to remove.

bilmac. If you just break a pane and not the sash it's self. You can still just have the glass replaced. Dale

Go a head and take a crack at it. I have installed well over 1,000 windows in my time. Dale

Wow I just did the math. I install at least 150 windows a year. There was 10 years that that was about all I did. So in those years I could install that many in 8 weeks or so. I just figured 150 a year for 23 years and that comes to 3,450 windows. So I would bet I really have installed close to 10,000 windows in my life. Now that even amazes me. :o ;D Dale

I have mostly Jeldwins. Looks to me that the glass is encased in solid plastic. You're saying that there are people that can cut out the glass and glue in new? I imagine that it would be expensive, almost as much as replacing the whole window, but I don't even like to think about replacing the window, I put them in so I know what a job it will be replacing them.

I get paranoid whenever there are balls flying around the neighborhood, or heavy clouds start gathering.

What we do at the cannery is take a shot of vinegar for cramps and stiff muscles from "start up flu". Weird, but the aches are gone by the time the vinegar hits the stomach.

(It might not work for cramps from potassium shortage or menstrual cramps.)

Well, I'll give vinegar a shot. The least it can do is taste like crap. :) I do the calcium and potassium thing every day to keep the cramps away. Don't think I'm a candidate for the last type.  ;D

Tommy, I'll try to get a coupe of pictures up today.

Bilmac, the retired window guy I referred to in the OP told me he glued in replacement glass with silicone. He also said that the lumberyard variety of silicone wasn't up too the job. Been so long ago I've forgotten the brand he used.

I was a professional window installer among other things the many years i lived in florida , if you need a step by step of what to do shoot me a PM and i'll get you my number and walk you through according to the make and material used in your windows.... I couldnt even begin to guess the amount of windows i have yanked out and new ones put in the hole ;)

Dales right thou .. a couple pics wouldnt hurt ... Tools if you have them that walk it right along are a blow dryer or professional heat gun ... a 5 in 1 a putty knife a hammer and a flat pry bar for getting the window out ... nothing more then a screw gun ,chalk , chalk gun , torpedo level , extra set of hands and a level eye are needed to set the next window

     Default

P.S. : if you need i can lend a hand with getting those pictures posted too ... Oh and fogot to mention a 1x 4 block of would to brace againt the interior window jam for the pry bar  ;)

Bill ,

That plastic incasing you are reffering to is called a sash ... actually depending on the window and 9.9 times out of ten it isnt solid .. The glass is two layers with a aluminum bead in between them sealed with a non-hardening epoxy  then gas filled to prevent fogging , the outside of the sash has whats called a fleagle ( not 100% sure on the spelling but that is what the word sounds like  ;D ) ... What you do is use your 5 in 1 to pry the fleagle out of its locking channel on the sash frame ... If its really old or cold you might find its easier to heat / warm the fleagle up with a heat gun to make it easier there will be adhesive back there in alot of cases... Once the fleagle is removed you warm up the adhesive that is bonding the glass and the sash frame and the inside man runs his putty blade in between the two surfaces thus popping out the glass .... do the same for top and bottom sashes .

For anyone else that might care though , next you use your pry bar and hammer  ( If Aluminum or Steel Framed , its alot easier if its the newer vinyl windows ) to bend inward the lips of the frame that the sahes are in this will allow to  remove the sashes from the main window frame ... Dont worry about being gentle with it ;) .. Once you are down to no windows and the empty frame in the hole , this is where the pry bar and 1x peice of would come into play , since new construction windows and usually nailed into place you start prying  (from the inside) in the middle of the longest length of the frame ... from there its pretty explanitory  as the fram has already started to collapse inward and is just a matter of breaking the rest of the original flange loose ...

No mind you there have been alot of different manufacturers out there over the years so i have ran into many a odd ball window that took different approaches but with the same result , window goes bye bye ...

Anyone needs any help with this area of home maintenace , I would be more then happy to walk you through it on the phone , just ask ...

Thanks Default I do almost everything myself, but I don't expect that I will try taking apart a plastic window. Best thing would not let them get broke in the first place.

I am thinking about putting some shutters on the house, It would improve the looks a lot, but making them so they actually work. A couple of years ago I watched a hailstorm go by north of town so close that you could hear it. It sure would have been nice to just close some shutters over the windows.

No I do not dought an hour install. On a regular double hung window with wood stops inside I can remove re-install and wrap the outside of the window with metal in less than an hour in most cases. Now if you are talking about a casement window like we are talking about here it could take that long to get the window alone out of the hole. Once it is out of the hole it is a piece of cake. Dale
