Weatherby Mark V
« on: May 05, 2009, 03:36:15 PM »
One of these days, I'm going to find me a German made Weatherby Mark V in .30-06.  If they made them.

A German made Weatherby would have more appeal.

The Weatherby MKV action and rifle is rather heavy.  If your big and strong then ok but I prefer lighter rifles for myself.

Years ago I had a German made Weatherby in 378 WM.  What a cannon that was.  I am glad its gone.

A good friend of mines dad has a german made Weatherby 300 weatherby mag.  I think he said it was made in the early 50's.  He has fired it only once.  He said he wishes now he wouldn't have shot it but he did it when he was younger.  Gun is absolutely mint.  He wanted to make me a good deal on it about a month ago.  Still haven't decided.

For me the fact that it was made in Germany rather than Japan would be a factor.

Not sure what you mean by this - collector value ?? The early Weatherby Mark V and Vanguard (mauser action) Japanese made rifles are of outstanding quality - and the recent Vanguard actions are as well made as any other under $1000 rifle out there - bonus being the Vanguards are $399 and if you add a Bell and Carlson stock - http://midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=130802 such as this one you have a nice package.

They did make MArk V's in 30:06 - it was the only non Weatherby caliber made in German Mark V rifles if I remember correctly.

I'm only really interested in the wood stocked Weatherbys.  I'm sure the rifles made in Japan are fine.  I'd just prefer one made in Germany or the USA.

I mourn the day I passed up a .270 Weatherby with Weatherby scope marked Hollywood, CA a few years ago.  They wanted $550.00 and at the time I didn't want a .270.  I sure wish I 'd bought it.

I had my hands on one in the 70's.  A friend of mine once had a gun shop and when he sold out he kept several of his favorite rifles.  For sure it was a Mark V in 30-06.  I think it was German made also.

FWIW-
According to most Weatherby afficianados, the Japanese guns are the best Weatherby's out there in terms of overall quality (fit, finish, grade of wood etc). The German guns are second, the USA guns, a distant third.
