any negatives about the 50cal?
« on: September 14, 2003, 03:57:18 PM »
I'm seriously looking at investing in an encore in 50 cal. I realize your all t/c fans,  but  has anyone had any bad experiences with this m/l? I really like the interchangeability factor, which is why I'm kinda shying away from the omega. Any honest opinions are greatly appreciated.

thanks.

I've had good luck with my 50 cal, heard some of the 45 cals were poor shooters. The only complaint I have is the extractor, you have to remove it to remove the breech plug. They have a new extractor that makes this extra step unnecessary, but I've read they are prone to breakage.

:) Gotta agree with the rest of the guys.  I have had no problems at all with this rifle.  I can't say that for another barrel I purchased.

The only problems i have heard of is with the aftermarket extractors. They will break but i havent talked to anyone or heard of the factory extractor breaking, not to say it hasnt.I leave mine in and havent had any problem with it at all.I think taking it out is not a bad idea and wouldnt hurt anything either.

I would recommend that you remove the extractor and store it someplace. This makes removeing the breech plug very easy. and cleaning is very easy. It is not needed in my opinion. Primers fall out or are easily removed with your fingers.

1. If you plan to mount a scope, a fixed 4power will cause much less grief than a variable high power, many times the latter run out of elevation adjustment. There are many posts in the past on this boared about that.

2. Pellets will produce flyers using the 150 grain load, loose powder will not do this. Also many posts about this on this board.

Overall a fine piece of ordinance.

Echo most sentiments. Have had one for 4 years, never any problems on ignition, cleaning etc. Use 150 gr loads with 2" accuracy at 100yds and just about 5" at 200 so it shoots as good as expected. Will say 150 gr loads must be shot with bullets designed for that velocity. Hornady 240 gr XTP's are prone to fly all over at 150 gr but are deadly at 100 gr. Need to try combinations to see what works for you. I believe any .45 cal. 250 gr. will shoot as good as needed since the .45's seem to shoot best in most rifles I have been around. Thinner sabot appears to be ticket for consistent accuracy. Just bought new turn out extractor to try but agree don't even need one. Have older 3x9x40 Tasco World Class that I had laying around on it and no windage or elevations problems. Scope eye relief is something you want to keep in mind. I will be putting a leupold 3x9x40 on it to gain the 4" eye relief for the heavier loads I shoot otherwise the standard 3" was OK with good grip...Will say 150 gr pellet load behind 300 gr. .45 cal XTP is stout recoil but damn does it shoot! I use it when I am hunting close cover where I want more energy to keep the critter from going to deep into swamp I hunt. I also have a Custom Shop 20 ga. slug barrel that shoots like a rifle at 100 yds with Federal expander sabots. Easy 2" groups with it and pleasure to hunt with especially of of snug tree stands. 06 barrel shoots MOA with 165 BT's which seems only bullet it likes at all so far. Once you buy an Encore then the real fun begins on which barrel is next....
