Bullet length on a M83 .357?
« on: May 06, 2009, 09:56:33 AM »
I'm about to order an LBT mold for my M83. Veral needs a measurement from the end of the case to the end of the cylinder to know which nose length the bullet has to have. It says to use a crimped case. Thing is my .357 dies are at a friends house, and I don't have an empty crimped case lying around. I tried it with a Starline virgin case and measured 0.520". Would it be safe to have Veral set the bullet length to 0.500"?? Or is the difference between a crimped case and an uncrimped case to big??

Maybe someone in here knows the correct length with a crimped case??

Remember that FA guns are counter bored so end of cylinder and base of case are the same point. So measure your cylinder and use the factory specs for case length. Don't forget to leave a wee bit of wiggle room for bullet jump just in case it does.

So you're saying I should measure the length of my cylinder and subtract the length (stated in the reloading manual) of the case? Plus leave a little more room for bullet jump?

Maximum cartridge lenght for a Model 83 is 1.765" (454 overall length).  So take 1.765 minus 1.290 (.357 Mag. case length) equals .475 max. nose length for a .357 mag.  As Greybeard stated, this gives some wiggle room just in case a bullet pulls a bit.

Thank you Bob, I'll pass that on to Veral  :)
