Old bow is not an old mans friend.
« on: May 06, 2009, 11:01:19 AM »
As some of you have read i have pulled my old Darton out of the mothballs
and started shooting,(should have let the moths have it) Set at 55#
31" draw it is a blazing 190fps with a about 500 gr arrow. I can live with this i guess but the problem is the 30-40% letoff, the first 2 arrows at 20yds i can
put in the white, the next 3-4 i get a "little shaky" they are in the blue. Never
noticed it being that hard to hold 35 years ago, maybe something is wrong with it.
I was told at the proshop/range that if you hold it more than 4 sec. you have
missed.. I watch those kids (anyone under 40) draw those itsy-bitsy
bow and hold it for 15 minutes, and put them all in the white, most touching.
I will know the 11th of june if i made the draw in N.M. if i did i am in the market
for a late model bow with about 97.5% letoff at 55-60#, untill then i will
keep shooting the shoulder breaker who knows by then i may be able to
handle it  ::)

Rex you keep working out with that old Darton by the time you get that new bow you should be able to hold it for 1/2 hour. ;D
Bought a new PSE Brute two years ago, which is one of the cheapest priced parallel limbs bow(400.00)and is very quiet@80% lett-off.But I have shot PSE for 20 years, have always had good luck.

Well I am only 59yoa, does that mean that living about 65 miles farther north than Euless I might have to give up my re-curve bow? I doubt I can hold it back 2.5 seconds. When I come up, I had better shoot, or forget it. Crap I hate gettin old.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

yea, i can feel myself getting stronger every time i leave the range. I have been looking at some PSE bows, been around a long time, like
Hoyt, and some others. Dicks sport has a sale on some Martins, Martin is an old name but these bows seem cheap bilt. I guess Mathews is
on top for the time being. Is Mathew really that much better?

I'm sure the pro shop guy warned you about the Darten's age. If it is really 30 yrs. old be careful of the string, the cable ends, and the limb glue joints. If you restring it be sure it is not with any of the modern wonder materials. Your bow was not designed for the shock they impart on the rest of the bow. If you are using your fingers to shoot with, that old bow may still be your friend. There is quite a bit of pinch in those new fangled crossbow wanta be 30 some inch compounds.

There are a lot of great bows built today, and yes even the Martin line is a good line.  I shoot a Mathews Drenalin because that is what I liked when I purchased my bow.  I also shot the Bowtec 2008 lineup and a buddies General, as I did the PSE X Force when it came out.  I still went back and bought the Mathews Drenalin.

All the bows are very nice, I just shot a Diamond (made by Bowtec) the other day, very quiet and nice.  I can't comment on a Hoyt, but they again are great bows.

I had shoulder surgery back in November, and my doctor told me that I would not be drawing a bow again.....  ::) how wrong he was.  I turned my Drenalin down to a 60# draw weight and worked at it, and now I'm back up to my 70# draw weight as I shoot everyday for about 3 hours.  On average I'm shooting about 40 to 60 arrows a session.

Have fun and shoot safe.

He really ndidn't have to warn me, I bought it new in 1974 or 75, every thing is fine on the bow, i had it checked out, wish i was in as good of shap
as it is, it is kicking my butt.

OH YEA Dee you have to step up, and get a better hi -fangled bow, that is what i was told several times. some times i think i will start
a new/old sport called spear hunting, think i will make one about twenty feet long. ;D
