Help Make English the Official Language.

All one has to do is e-mail your Senator a letter statoing you support the English Language Unity Act.  It will only take a few mintues of your time and may save hours in the future by eliminate the need to "press 1 for English."

Yesterday Sen. James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) introduced a companion bill in the Senate to Rep. Steve King's H.R. 997, The English Language Unity Act of 2009 that would make English the official language of the United States. He did so on the same day his home state of Oklahoma passed an official English constitutional amendment in the Oklahoma House by a vote of 89-8! That measure will be on the ballot in Oklahoma in 2010.  The English Language Unity Act of 2009, S.991: *Requires the federal government to communicate officially in English, including informational materials and forms. *Creates a uniform standard for testing English proficiency in the naturalization process. *Requires that naturalization ceremonies be conducted in English. S.991 also nullifies Executive Order 13166, the federal mandate that requires federal fund recipients including state and local governments, to provide translations and interpreters for non-English speaking residents. Throughout our history, Americans have expected immigrants to assimilate. But today government multilingualism threatens to destroy the 'Melting Pot' that enabled us to forge one nation out of millions of immigrants from every nation on earth. Despite the overwhelming desires of the American people, Congress still has not acted to make English the official language of the United States. Please send an email to your two U.S. Senators urging them to support S.991!

The first question I have is what would be the purpose of making English the official language? Some 30 States have already adopted English but what's the point? The next question would be which version of English should we adopt?

What about the indigenous languages, we most surely would have to adopt them as well. Or do we mandate the Native Alaskan to discontinue his use of Inuit? What about Tagalog, Hawaiian or Sioux?

Should we spell it "Aluminum" or "Aluminium"? Does little Bobby get an F if he supplants Color with Colour or is it Colour with Color?

English is the official language of India.  They have about 7 different languages nationwide, so in order to graduate high school you must learn English.  It is the official airline language, the official scientific language, the official business language, and the official internet language of the entire world.  Why, because between the Americans and Britts, most commerce, inventions, etc were made by them.  Our own country doesn't have an "official" language, thus the confusion with Spanish, etc.  It should be required with immigration.  There are only two major types of English, Brittish and North American (includes Canada).  There are dialects such as Southern, Austrailian, etc.  It is also the official language of the former Brittish colonies.  800,000,000 people are supposed to be able to speak English.  Europeans learn it to graduate high school also.  Chinese has over 1 billion, however, it is confined to China only and they have been trying to adapt a western styled alphabet so foreigners can learn their language easier.  Spanish is the third most widespread language.

It was the language of our founding fathers.  They never envisioned the country speaking anything but English or I am sure they would have made a provision for that in the Constitution.  So let's fix it.
