I might have bought into the hype a bit today
« on: May 08, 2009, 11:23:43 AM »
I was at a local Cabela’s today and looked around…I was there to get broadhead adaptors but since I was there I took a walk around.

I don’t have a need for the powder I bought today (H110) but they had it at a good price and it was the last 1 lb can they had.  I have always wanted to try it in my 357 Mag, 41 Mag and 44 Mag…but never saw the need to get some; I’ve always used W296.  Well I’ve seen powder around $5 more a pound lately and this was still marked at the “normal” rate so I bought it.

Granted I would have bought some eventually to try but I might have bought into the hype and bought it quicker than I needed it.  I’m going to justify it by saying I’m helping the economy!

Thats good enough reason. If you decide that you don't need it or want it there are plenty of men here that will take it off your hands.

If you've used W296 then you've used H110. They are the SAME POWDER.

I know theyre supposed to be the same powder, and that Hodgdon makes Winchester and IMR powders, but why do all of the recent loading manuals still list different loads for the two powders?  I have the latest Speer and Hornady books, and both of them show different charges for H110 and W296 for the same cartridge and bullet weight.

Because they are from different lots. Same applies when they retest with a different lot of either the data would change slightly IF they were to reshoot it. Mostly they don't reshoot even tho no one will ever have powder from the same lots they had.

To the best of my knowledge Hodgdon has NEVER made any smokeless powder. They are just a marketer, they buy from other sources and repackage and resell.  When they bought IMR, that got them in the powder manufacturing business.

I have tried both W296 and H110, in both my .41 and .44mags. I found that they have equal results.
