What color plastic worm?
« on: May 08, 2009, 03:14:31 PM »
I've been bass fishing a few years off and on with my father. I think outside of professional fishermen, my father has caught more big bass than anyone I know. I asked him one time how do you decide on what color plastic worm to use. He gave me an answer but for the life of me I dont remember it. Something to do with using darker colored plastic worms on more overcast days? Is that correct?

I used purple exclusivly back in the 60s and 70s...My brother used black, we both caught fish...  ;D

When it comes to color of worms, I'd bet red shade, junebug (purple) and black would all be in the top 5 colors...

When it comes to lizards, watermelon is popular when the water is clear and chartruse when muddy...

For weightless worm fishing I like orange sherbert...

On bright days, bright colors, on dark or over cast days, and murky water, I use dark purple and or black.
If neither works, I use dynamite. :o
Just kiddin, I use rote-none fertilizer. :o
Ok, ok. I start switching out, until I find a color or bait that works. Different depths also, an search the shallows and channels. There are a myriad of things to check, but trial and error eventually pay off. ;D

If I could only have one color, it would be black.  If I could have 2 the other would be purple.

I use to do alot of bass fishing in N.W. Louisiana on a body of water known as Black Bayou. Plastic worms were deadly!  As earlier replies have noted that they favor for the most part black an purple colors. There was one bait that I used to use called a " Bluegill Stump Crawler". I used this in a purple or a medium blue. This was a plastic worm of sorts with four legs and a slightly enlarged head. Purple seem to be the most productive. Although the blue colored baits seem to activate more agressive strikes. The trick was just to cast the bait up on a log, stump, base of a tree and let slide down into the water.
Old " Bucket Mouth" was usually waiting not to far away!
Also used regular plastic worms around Cypress stumps or trees where you could ease the boat up to and see the bass down among the root system, and drop the worm in their vincinity and get ready!

have also had pretty good luck with purple worms here in Colorado.

What I have the most luck with is an 8 or 9 inch black worm, with a slip, cone shaped weight. I believe its called a Texas worm rig. The worm is bounced on the bottom slowly. This works great when bass are spawning. The bass will pick it up to carry it out of thier spawning beds. They see it more as an intruder, like a snake, then a meal.

5inch or 7 inch Culprit blue with a PINK not red curly tail works most of the time . followed by purple , black then red .
Around here we have to order the blue and pink worm at a store that stocks 50 other culprit worms go figure .

The hot ticket here in my local is Watermelon or Pumkin Seed with Chart curl tail.  These are the colors I use about 90% of the time and I ususally score pretty good on the 2-4 lbs fish.

Black and red shad, dark colors always seem to work best for me, like the ribbed worms or traditional Power Worms

If it`s a "floater" then Bubble Gum is the color.

Back in the 70's when i first went bass fishing we used a Creme black 6" worm split shot rigged.  We would fish near an iland or off a weedline were the weeds dropped off and were out of site we would anchor at this spot and fish into the weeds.  We would cast it out and move it a foot every 5 minutes or so.  It was slow fishing but we had awesome success.

Today its the worms with the chartruse, fire or red tails or the usual black worm again split shot rigged.

My favorite color is called CHRISTmas purple wienie, by robo worms. Its dark transparent green with a purple stripe down the length of the worm with red & green flake in it. My other favs are oxblood with red flake,
june bug blue, watermelon seed with red flake<-- (this ones HOT), & red craw. I fish mostly murky water.

Heres a rigging tip. dont use exposed weights, rig it texas weedless as if you were going to fly line it & put a tungsten weight in the head.
I found that I get allot more bites this way.

7 inch Culprit Red Shad, I've caught bass year round clear or cloudy, doesn't seem to matter.

Same here. For either Texas or Carolina rig, I've caught more on a Culprit Red Shad than any other.
