What is Going On
« on: May 09, 2009, 04:12:44 AM »
What the heck is going on with my tumbler?
I Tumbled this brass over night and look at it :o
Same thing happened with a small batch of 30-30
I did last weekend.
This media is not very old at all.
The second picture includes 3 pieces
that I did not do and this is how the others started.
HELP :'( :-\

It almost looks like you put something on the brass to clean the crud out of your media......and it worked!

Have you added anything to your media? From the pictures they looked pitted or something. I'd dump that media, clean the inside of my tumbler and refill with some freah stuff.

Another thing I thought of...Had you used some kind of case lube prior to putting them in the tumbler? Some folks resize and punch primers before tumbling.

I have not added anything to the media
and it worked fine on the first half dozen batches I did.
The only thing out of the ordinary is I add a quartered
dryer sheet to collect the dust and it has worked great for months
so I doubt that could be the culprit.
I just can not figure where all the crud is coming from.

This started last week with some 30-30 brass, re sized to 7-30Waters
that I got with my new to me Carbine barrel.
It was not freshly sized brass and had been shoot.
I really do not know it's history or that of the 204's
I am tumbling now but am 99% sure it is once fired factory brass.

It's Stuck.
I had to use brake clean to get it of the 30-30
and it still left a stain :-\

Well buddy , you have only one option . toss the media , wash out the tumbler , wipe off the cases with break cleaner and start from scrach .

Sounds like it was a chemical reaction between something that was on the cases and the dryer sheet , I also see a bunch of black crud on the tumbler nut that may be getting down into the media also .

That black crud came from tumbling
It was not there before.

I agree I need to start fresh
but it sure does not make since.

Any PMC brass in the lot? Dunno what it is with PMC but every time I've put it in the tumbler with others my brass came out that way. I no longer use PMC period. I've seen some stored improperly look like that but not nearly so bad. It will spread like weeds in a garden. I'd dump the media and not reuse it and clean out the tumber good. If you have any PMC brass trash it.

The only thing I've ever seen that will remove that mess is ISSO liquid case cleaner. It will clean them up fast as can be and take all that black off or it did from mine.

No Bill I don't think so.
The 7-30's were Win.
and a quick look the 204's are Hornady.

You got all the use out of that media you want to get.
Looking at the top of the bowl where the thumb screw is you can see all the carbon and the stuff on your brass is dirt stuck on the heavy lube you had on the case.
Clean the brass with soap and water let it dry and run them back through clean media and all will be well.

Maybe it came from the 2000 38's I did 2 weeks ago.
They came out OK but may have just been time.
Thanks everyone.

I get that when the media is old and has accumulated excess lube and brass crud. Its kind of a waxy build up.

I will say this....it takes a better man than me to tumble .204 Ruger brass and then spend tedious time cleaning the media out of those little neck cases. I did it once to a batch of 500 pcs. ....never ever again. LOL

It's no problem getting the media out of the brass
Just roll it for about 20 seconds in the media separator.
What is a pain in the butt right now is washing 96 pcs
one at a time in hot soapy water but it is coming off.

If hot soapy water is taking it off it's NOT the same stuff I was talking about.

Anyway thanks to all that replied and all is good ;)
Spent a few hours cleaning everything,
Added new media and have some nice shiny brass
Thanks
