30-'06 & 45/70 Handi Range Report
« on: May 09, 2009, 11:44:51 AM »
Finally got a chance to get to the range and try out the new 30-'06 and
45/70 Handis. I loaded up some rounds for the 45/70 using Remington
300 grain JHP's and 49.1 grains of H4198. The starting load in the Lee
reloading handbook for lever action rifles. According to the book velocity
should be around 2000 fps. For the 30-'06 I had some Hot Shot 180 grain
JSP commercial ammo. I shot the '06 first. This rifle is an ejector model.
The first 7 rounds stuck in the chamber after firing and would not eject.
I had to use a cleaning rod to get the cases out of the chamber. The
next 13 rounds ejected with no problems. 20 total rounds fired. Groups
were nothing to write home about. I tried a few rounds with the forearm
off with a little improvement. I'm going to reload for this rifle and do a little
forearm work. I think I will definitely get much better groups. The Mueller
APV scope worked great! Up next was the 45/70. This is the first time I
have shot a 45/70. It did pretty well. On target with only 4 rounds.
Recoil was pretty stout with both rifles, but very manageable thanks to
the Past Magnum Recoil Shield. I love shooting the 45/70! I need to
find the right load combination. Groups were definitely minute of deer
out to 100 yards, but I know I can do better. I like the Swift 4X32mm
scout setup on this rifle. It was really comfortable to use. Shot a total
of 40 rounds through the 45/70 today. Why did I wait so long to get
a 45/70 Handi! I understand now why so many folks here rant and
rave about how much they love their 45/70's. This is an awesome
caliber! I would love to try it on hogs someday.

Your sticking '06 cases were the reason I had my '06 ejector changed to extractor by a member here.  They may not stick for 100 rounds, but when they do you can bet you're gonna need a refill in a hurry.  I'll stay with my extractors any day.

Der ain't nuttin like da .45.70.........go ask your grandpa, or your grandpa's cousin, or whoever's still around.

Make sure your shells are clean and not corroded or dirty.  Also make sure the chamber is clean.  I own seven Handis and have only had one suck casing.  New gun, first cartridge would not eject the unfired cartridge, never fired the gun, sent it back and they fixed it.  Love those ejectors.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough,
Brand spanking new commercial Hot Shot 180 grain SP ammo. I scrubbed the chamber
and the bore prior to shooting. After a few (7 rounds) it didn't have any F.T.E. issues.
I plan on running a hundred rounds through it and see how it goes.

Pete,
This is my first ejector Handi. I'd be lying if I said that I was less than impressed
with the performance of the ejector so far. If it does not improve I will switch over
to an extractor PRONTO!

No truer words have ever been spoken , my Friend! I have no doubt that once I get
the load for this 45/70 dialed in, it will be one of my favorite Handi's! 45/70's ROCK! ;D
