terrible day for me today guys!
« on: May 09, 2009, 12:29:14 PM »
did some casting today and when i was done i set some ingots in the pot to melt and went to town and came back a hour later and my pole barn was burned to the ground. All my reloading gear casting gear brass bullets (probably close to a million cast bullets) powder primers everything. Not feeling to swift right now. My own fault and probably alot of the blame goes to my terrible housekeeping but the wife and i quit figureing at 30000 bucks and that isnt even figureing what the ammo would cost to buy it at the store, thats what it cost me loading it. You have no clue how much time there was invested let alone money! The loss sucks but the worse part is alot of that stuff you just cant replace right now. Like primers! Looks like Lloyd isnt doing much shooting this summer!

Can you recover the lead?  Sorry about your loss.

That's just down right terrible Lloyd. I'm at a loss for words, except God Bless you and your family and Thank God that it wasn't worse, like someone getting injured or the rest of the buildings being burned down. It sure proves that rotten things can happen to good people. My heart goes out to you Lloyd.

That really sucks.  Was the Jeep and the neighbor's boat in the barn?  If there is anything I can do let me know.  Just to be safe I'm coming over tomorrow to collect your firearms and hold them in a secure location.

Do you know specifically what caused it Lloyd? I mean lead in the pot is kind of a normal thing so wouldn't normally create a fire. Any clue what the source of the fire actually was?

Sorry to hear of the loss as it sure is a devestating one. Will insurance cover the cost? If so maybe you'll have the bucks if the supply ever opens up again.

That's tough, but there may be a bright side. You sound like one of those guys who would rather load than shoot. You will be starting over , but back when you started everything you did was more meaningful. Now as you start up again you will have to be setting priorities, thinking about how to to do the most with the least. Maybe it will be like going back 20 or 30 years, you may not want to but you may be the better off for it.

Sorry about your loss Lloyd.  For some one that likes to shoot, hint, cast, and reload as much as you do, this must really hurt.  Let me know what I can do for you.

My guess is i put to much lead in the pot and it ran over, either that or it shorted out. Its a total loss. It wont do much good to send stuff as i wont have a place to even load for months. Ive got insurance but it wont cover replacing the barn with one the same size and the contents insurance wont pay for a 1/3 of what was in there. You would have had to see it before the fire to understand. There was probably a million cast bullets sized and lubed in there that are gone! I was never one for charity and sure arent going to change now. If someone was dead or i didnt have a place to live that would be one thing but this is only reloading stuff and it can be replaced. The only favor i can ask is if you run accross any primers,.223,308 or 45acp brass at a reasonable price shoot me an email and ill send you the money for it. Id at least like to find some primers so when i get up and going i can at least get some ammo loaded. I kept enough powder in the house to get up and going on a small scale anyway and most of my molds were in the house but to get back to where i was before probably wont happen in my lifetime. I was about sick at first with this deal but something opened my eyes. A good friend that is about bedridden with a broken neck drug himself out of bed and made the trip down to confort me. Looking at him standing there in pain made me really understand how small of a deal this really is!! Id gladly put a fire to everything i own to see him feeling better!

Lloyd, again I'm sorry about your loss.  A lot of time and effort went in casting and lubing all those bullets.  When you figure replacement cost on all of that for the insurance co, but sure to figure it at todays prices.  Again, sorry about the barn.  Probably a good thing you were not home, you might have been injured trying to fight it.  Prayers for you.  44 Man

One of the members of our gun club had a similiar fire, but he reloaded in his basement.  No one home at the time, neighbor saw smoke, fire dept showed up fast and started spraying; things started going pop, pop, fire dept retreated and sprayed surrounding area letting house burn til all popping stopped. It could have been worse.  Hope you can get back in action real soon.

There is nothing good about your loss, but when you come back you will still have all the knowledge you have gained over the years. As a result I bet your new set up is going to be far more efficient than your old one.  Good luck.  Sorry about your loss.

Thank God nobody was injured.

Gosh, I can't say how sorry I am to hear that. We all think about something happening like that but we never expect to be living it. At least no one was injured.

Lloyd,
Sorry to hear about your great loss.  I'm sure if you list some basic stuff that you need to get things going again the great folks on GB will be more than happy to help up you out. I know I have extra stuff around that my wife would like me to get rid of. Let us know.
Hang in there Lloyd.
