Remington 74 sportsman
« on: May 09, 2009, 02:27:53 PM »
I have a friends Remington sportsman 74 auto rifle.
As I understand it they are the last in the line of the
740, 742, model 4, 7400 series. His is one of the Jam-o-Matics !
I am familiar enough to know that these rifles were
"known" for jamming on extraction but that is about it.
Some one told me that this was due to a defective part
in the bolt (some sort of nylon part?). Anyone familiar with this?

I have a model 74 and the only feeding problem I've had with it was when it would cycle a cartridge into the chamber the bolt would sometimes not close all the way. I played with the magazine lips a little to adjust the angle of the cartridges. It works great now.

This one is on extraction, the spent case never leaves the ejection port fully.

Apparently, you'v got to really scrub the chamber out, using the brush provided with the rifle, every 20 rounds or so, or they are prone to jam.  I don't think it has anything to do with a nylon part.

Also, the shorter rounds, such as the .308 and .243, seem to have fewer problems than the longer rounds, such as the .30-06 and the .35 Whelen.

And, with the newer version of the rifle, I have heard that if they jam right out of the box, then 9 out of 10 times, it is a bad magazine.  (Remington apparently has an improved or corrected version of the magazine that they will send you, but people report mixed results with those as well.)
