Front globe to match Lyman 57SML
« on: May 10, 2009, 12:07:20 PM »
I have this old, handmade, 40 caliber muzzleloader that I bought years ago.  A few weeks later i packed up and moved across the country.  And got busy with a million other things.

So a couple of weeks ago I took her to the local range and fired her, finally.  They have a "Muzzledusters" shoot the 4th Sunday each month.  That was tons of fun.  However, open sights and +50 eyes don't mix.  I don't want to ruin the looks with a scope--besides which I know I can do okay with peep sights.  So, after some research, I found the 57SML tang-mounted peep sights.  I can afford one.  It looks like the front globe sight to match would be one of the variants of the Lyman #17.  Problem is, I can't tell from looking which #17 to get.  They are different heights.

Does someone here have the 57SML mounted with one of the #17 front sights who can tell me which one is the right one to use?

Everyone I've seen was using open sights, or WGRS, or inline with scope.  Didn't like those options.

Thanks,
Keith

Here's a link to a page at Track of the Wolf that explains the use of the different heights and my suggest height for your application.

The taller ones are for rear sites like this;

Also cruise down the main page on this site and read the "V-peeps pros and cons" for a few more options, there are photo's and links for the Marbels peep along with an optional spelling bee compition  :D

Thanks, Necchi.  I saw those, actually, but the discussion seemed to be for folks that couldn't use regular peep sights.  The homemade one actually looked kinda cool, and it was certainly an good cheap alternative.  The Creedmore Vernier tang sight I also saw, but I have opted for something more durable and click-adjustable.  I also looked at some dang-sho expensive vernier tang sights in the $300-$500 range that are too rich for my blood.  I looked at the idea of Blue Grouse of using the Williams Guide Receiver Sight--either in the rear sight dovetail or in a scope mount to bring it back.  So I finally sussed out pretty much that I want the 57SML on the back.  I might not have been specific enough in the first post about already having picked out the peep part.

Now that link to the Track of the Wolf has this information: " our most popular .494" for hunting sights, .584" for Vernier tang sights, and .852" for high target sight".  But that don't tell me diddly about a 57SML.

Here's the 57SML:

Lyman's information on the 57SML:

http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/muzzle-loaders/receiver-sights.php

And their instructions:

http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/muzzle-loaders/pdfs/lyc-ml-sml.pdf

In the instructions, they talk about the front sight choices for their rifles... which don't tell me diddly about MY rifle.

It may actually be that I need to order the 57SML, install it, dig out the calipers, and figger it out from the specs for the various front sight choices.  I know there ought to be some range of adjustment in the peep sight that will make up for some difference.  Maybe.  I was just trying to get a starting point and maybe see if I could order the front sight at the same time and save trouble.

Thanks for the interest and for your reply,
Keith

Well I have one, along with the AML. The plan was to mount it on a .36 cal GM barrel I have for my Renegade but that rifle has a bit wider stock at the panels so I'll have to remove a bit of wood to make the base fit. ( it might be the 1'' barrel that causes that) I'm not afraid to do so but I have a few other projects on the list before I get to that one.
I just tried a fit to my cabelas .54, my custom Kentucky .40 and my son's Traditions .50 and the base will fit on each, useing one tang screw and I'll hafta drill and tap the second hole in the tang. I might just mount it on the 40 and use it for "light bench".?
More important info for you I think, is that the 57 sits lower on the frame because it sits so far back, looking through the peep while it's on the .54 I can see my current installed rear site and the front blade and line up as if it wasn't there, in other words the current height of the front blade is/would be fine,,it's .380 high. same thing on the other two guns with a front blade height of .345 and .360,,,so I don't think the extra height of .584 or .852 is needed at least for the application I need. I do a bunch of rendezvous shooting and my local BP gunsmith has installed a bunch of these and supports the AML standard size.
Well I hope that's more info for ya,,Good luck, sure is good to hear ya dug out the .40 AND found a group to shoot with, that's alway's fun
