military calibers besides .223?
« on: May 11, 2009, 04:31:57 AM »
Obiviously, theres the 06 and .223. Any other ones? I would love one in 5.7x28, nice flat shooting round with little recoil.  I would love one in 5.45 or even a factory 7.62x39...

In a perfect world the military list would like this  45-70,*30-40Krag ,*7X57 Mauser,30-06*,30Carbine,*7.62X54R7.*7.62X39,7.62x51,223,*9mm ,45Colt  and* 45ACP.I am sure I have left something off.
The * indicates rounds that have not  been loaded by the factory IIRC. If I have mad a mistake the fine members here ;D will correct me. ::)       Doug

I would love to have a Handi in the venerable classic 303 British.    Its rimmed case would work perfectly in the Handi.   I'll bet more than a few of our Canadian hunters and shooters would like it too.

You forgot the Mighty .38 Special ;D, I carried a S&W in the Air Force up until the Beretta 9mm came along in the mid 80's. We shouldn't forget the .50 cal, 12ga, and 40mm.  ;) H&R used to make the M-79.

Our pilots carried the .38 Special during the 60s and I put a lot of rounds through them, along with the 1911s.

While in the Air Force from the 68 to the 89, I carried a .38 S&W, except for one short stint in the OSI where I carried a 1911 colt in .45ACP.  While in Beirut, my troops carried M-16s and M-60s in 5.56NATO and 7.62NATO.  I carried a .38

I would love one in 7.5x55.  I love my K31s and would love to have a handi in that caliber.  My son hunts with a Handi in 30-30, which I would probably use if he didn't.

I wish they would put out some more barrels in Military calibers.

Another 7.62x39 done right would be excellent and currently I am trying to get all the parts I need to make a stub in this cal.
And if a barrel in 8mm Mauser were ever done I would be all over it!
A 7.62x54R would most likley make for a very accurate chambering with such a large rim.
Yet again another good reason to put out a custom shop to run off some of these barrels.

I'm surprised no one mentioned probably one of the very best Military Rounds ever developed: the 6.5 X 55 Swede.

No need for any shame at all Doug. ;) You provided a very robust selection of great cartridges. I'd really like to have a rifle in 30-40 Krag and one in 7 X 57 Mauser.

Just a note, the .223 is not a military caliber.  That's the 5.56x45 and they're not interchangable.  I'm practicing making this point so if our government decides to ban military calibers for civilian use (I don't think they will, but still) then I will politely point out that none of my .223 ammo is a military caliber.  I know, I'll probably loose that fight.

Can I get a handi in 50BMG, or 20mm. . .that would be cool!

I , for another, one would love to see this litlle dandy in .303 British.  I know I'm being selfish since I reload my own, but in this rifle developing real custom rounds that would make one heckuva rifle.  My MK4 mod 2 is the best all around hunting rifle I have ever used, but you're limited to single loadings if the MOL is past the magazine clearance.  If Big Green would come out with a 25" barrel in .311 I would be all over that. ;D

A Handi in BMG would do equal damage to target and shooter!  I don't think any amount of lead in the bolt hole or mercury recoil suppressors will fix that....but I'm sure young Tye will try it out for us....

Obiviously, theres the 06 and .223. Any other ones? I would love one in 5.7x28, nice flat shooting round with little recoil.  I would love one in 5.45 or even a factory 7.62x39...
And if you want to get really picky about it, add the good ole 30-30 Winchester to the mix!

This thread has brought me back to probably the happiest days of my life.  In the early 60s, I was stationed at NAS Cecil Field, FL in Air Ordnance.  We had the ranges and the armory.  The small arms ranges were 100 feet from my office and the weapons and ammo were 50 feet from my desk.  I could shoot anything I wanted anytime.  We had BARs, M1s, Thompsons, grease guns, 1911s, .38s, 12 ga. M16s, .22s.....can't remember what else, but I shot them all whenever I could......all for free.
