Cleaning a Tikka T3
« on: May 11, 2009, 05:15:04 AM »
I read on another site that only a nylon brush should be used to clean a Tikka T3 - NOT a brass brush!    What do you guys say?    My first Tikka T3 arrives today!   Ordered a DEDNUTZ one-piece mount/rings for it, too.
Thanks in advance.

The owner's manual only mentions cleaning with a patch on page 16, some people may interpret the Do not scrub the barrel statement  as not to use a brush. I use foaming cleaners, very rarely need a brush, if I do, it's nylon.

CLEANING THE BARREL
When cleaning the barrel always do as follows:
- Always push the cleaning/oiling patch from the breech end.
- Do not scrub the barrel, simply push the patch through the barrel and out
through the muzzle. Repeat as necessary.
- Use only absolutely straight and sturdy cleaning rods.

The way I interpret  Clean only with a patch, so it is advised not to work a brass brush through the bore .This is were I got the idea then of just using a Nylon brush  to deliver the solvent , then use a patch over a Jag to clean.
Normally three or four patches now gets the job done. The bore snake has a brass brush attached .
The Manual advises you to clean with a patch , while other companies advise a few strokes ith a brush fit for calipier first followed by patches .
What happens should one stroke the barrel a few times with a good brush ? Well I am not going to find out .

Well I can tell you mine has had more than one thorough scrubbing with a brass brush. As far as I can tell there wasn't any steel on the brush when I finished. I'm not going to argue whether it truly needed a brush but I get tired of patching a barrel clean when a brush will get it done ten times sooner. As far as I'm concerned the cleaning rod is as likely to do the damage not a brass brush. The fewer overall strokes the better.

Patches and foam here too... rarely use brushes.
