168gr A-Max in .308 for Whitetails?
« on: May 12, 2009, 02:45:55 PM »
I've been shooting the 168 gr A-Max bullets out of my .308 with fantastic accuracy.  What I was wondering is, would you use this bullet for deer?  I the bullets are leaving the muzzle at around 2500 fps.  I don't think that these will open up too quickly, especially at those velocities.  I would like some feed back on those that have shot hooved animals with these.

Also, how about the Amax's brother, the 168gr Hornady BTHP?  These also shoot great.

The A-max bullets aren't meant to expand at all.  Not a good choice for hunting unless you're shooting something small that you care about the pelt on and that the icepick hole will still provide a clean kill on.

the A-Max is, according to the Hornady Cartridge Reloading Manual, generally for match shooting but is also excellent for hunting thin skinned game.  I think deer would fall into that category.  I may have to try these.  I recently worked up a load for my 30-06 using the 165gr SST.  I am getting 1" or better groups @ 100 yds with the SST over 52.5gr of H4350, the A-Max would probably do better and I could hunt with it as well.
If at first you don't succeed, parachuting is not for you.

buddy has killed a truck load of deer with that bullet out of his heavy barreled 308. Hes a farmer and has crop damage permits. He told me the bullet works excellent on deer.
