Light cast bullet load for the .30-30 NEF
« on: May 12, 2009, 04:41:26 PM »
I haven't visited here lately.  I shoot my different weapons in turn (but not in order) so sometimes I'm away from the NEF's for a while.  Some time ago, I made up a light cast bullet load in .30-30 and last weekend I had a chance to try it out.

The load is:

RP .30-30 case
170 gr. lead RNFP bullet w/ GC sized .310
19.0 gr. AA 5744
Fed 210 primer

This was a very pleasant load to shoot and also very accurate.  Sorry, no speed data on this one as I didn't have the chrono with me.

I debated if I should put this post with the other reloading information, but decided to put it here as it relates to the NEF Handi-Rifle.

I shoot the same bullet/powder in my Winchester 94 26" octagon barreled Legacy for long range Cowboy Action competition. We shoot 10 rounds at 190-200 yards on the clock at a 24" X 18" Buffalo steel target.
Cross sticks are used in the sitting position. I usually get 8-9 hits in about 60 sec. We start at the ready W/ magazine full, eight rounds for my rifle, hammer down on a empty chamber. The last two are single loaded.

I use 11 grains of 5744 . This load is very accurate and chronographs at 1200 fps.
If I need more zip, and getty-up I increase the powder to 16 grains of 5744.
And for more power I use 20 gr. of Alliant Reloder 7 with the same bullet.
