The 44mag do you really need anything else?
« on: May 13, 2009, 11:59:36 AM »
Just like the title says in the real word under normal hunting conditions would it not be the do all round?

It is the '06 of the pistol world. By far the most versatile caliber out there in terms of bullet selection, gun selection and performance vs price point. It will do 90% of everything well, 10% of the rest ok, nothing badly.

Well, I guess if you stick with deer size game and you already have a .357 you have a personal protection/deer hunting firearm in the same package. However, the same could be said about the .44 with a various number of loads. As could the .454 loaded with .45 Colts, or a .45 Colt itself loaded with a variety of loads.

None of my big bore hunting handguns get left behind. All I have now is 410 GNR which  may only be a 41 cal bullet, but from a 454 Casull case. 45 Colt, 475 Linebaugh, 480 Ruger 500 Mag and 510 GNR.

Oh I do have a small 357 Mag for rats,  two legged and four.   ;D

Need more or others no perhaps not but I do want more. I could get by with a .44 mag for my hunting and a .357 mag and .22 LR for just fun shooting and some lighter hunting chores. I have no need or desire for larger I've had them and they did nothing the .44 mag didn't do equally as well.

Put it this way if push came to shove and i could only own one handgun it would be a 44 mag hands down. Ive killed animals up to a 1000 lbs with it and it in the real world works as good as anything. Its fun shooting things with the linebaughs but ive seen very little difference in killing power using them. Where i would want more is if i was hunting something dangerous without a rifle backup. But for anything else it has been prover capable of killing any animal on earth.

I try to stay out of caliber wars... rifle or pistol, same with bullet wars...
put it in the right spot and it's game over

of course, it is fun to play around with different stuff and talk about it
since I sincerely doubt anyone here is 100% living off the land so to speak, it's all for fun and that's what it's all about

Yea but, that takes the fun out of it. If we all agreed this place would not last long, or it would be to boring. If we all agreed we also would have nothing to talk about.  :o

Yes shot placement is key to what ever you choose to shoot. But I don't see anything wrong with a good shot with a bigger hole.

You guys are making me feel bad that I sent my 44 Mag Ruger Super Blackhawk in and had it customized to a 475 Linebaugh....(NOT) ...lol  ;D :D

I've used a lot of rifles over the years, although I don't hunt with them any more. And, I've used a lot of handguns in a lot of calibers, mostly so I could learn all that I could  about them, and know what I was talking about. I enjoy big bores...both in handguns and rifles. And, I enjoy .22's and other smallbore centerfires. But to me, the .44 Magnum revolver is the perfect handgun. Maybe the perfect gun. For 100 yard hunting and 200 yard shooting, I don't need anything else. NEED is a dfifferent thing than WANT.
Now for long range hunting (where many will choose a rifle) , a single shot type pistol...T/C, XP, etc. is the ticket for me. And the hunting of some game in the world can only be done at long range. But at my age, my days of interrnational hunting are pretty much behind me. The .44 Magnum will suit me fine if it has to, thank you very much.
BUT I"M GLAD IT DOESN"T HAVE TO !

sheesh, don't let my wife hear you say that. I've just about got her convinced  I still need a coupla more calibers. There's a thin line between what a man truly needs and just what he wants......you're just adding to the confusion.

I personally don't need anything else.  I have other stuff, but I could get it all done with my .44.

+1 bigtime!

+1 Variety is nice.  It can be a pain keeping inventory for all the different calibers though.  I keep my eyes open for a good deal on a Ruger redhawk 44 so I can have two guns feeding off the same lot of ammo.

Yea I could survive with just a 44 mag but then the same could be said for the 44sp, 45 colt (my favorite), 480 Ruger, 475 Linebaugh and many others including the 45 acp. The bottom line is find a gun you shoot very well, pick a good hard cast bullet, and shoot the animal where it needs to be shot and the game is over...

Of course that is no fun and we are all in search of the perfect handgun for us. For me the 44 mag would be the last of the above cartridges. Not because it is the worst it just interests me the least for no particular reason other that everyone has one....

I checked my safe and found out that .44s wins.  8 to7 over .45 Colts.

I'm hung up on both .44 & .45 and haven't decided what I'd want if I could only have one...  Hell, I can't even settle on one barrel length.  (I've got the same hang-up about finishes)

I was at a deer hunting symposium in Nashville a number of years ago and found a great saying.
Brenda Valentine was questioned by a local 'Magnum Rifle Shooter' as to why she only shot a .270, and her reply was " Honey, Dead is Dead "
(You just can't type her Tennessee drawl, but it sounded more like 'Deaaad is Deaaad')
I've never forgot her reply, but I find it applies to most of my hunting senerios.
The .44s & .45s usually get the job done.

I couldn't live with just one caliber. Never shot a caliber I didn't like. I'd have to agree with Redhawk1, bigger is better.

I've had a 44 mag model 29, I Dearly loved that handgun. Sold it last year to buy my youngest son a new shotgun.

That 44 mag could be loaded for bear or down loaded to take black birds off a fence post for fun!
If I get the chance I'll have another, and since that was my last son, if I get another, I'll not sell it I think!

The only hand gun I wont let outa my sight is a glock 21 in 45 acp, other than that the 44 mag is my favorite
