223 for very petite woman??

DW is looking for a very small .223. 
She is very petite.
rifle weight as well as LOP and overall length is an issue for her.
Is anyone familiar with any of these Bolt actions and their performance? 
She prefers natural wood or laminate stock over synthetic.
I have no knowledge of any listed below having never owned any of them.
Are there any other models around 6lbs and 30x inches in length she should be considering?

I am a huge fan of the CZ.  The Carbine is a very handy little rifle, I don't know about length of pull but that can be fixed easily enough.  Accurate, accurate rifles too, the CZ's are.

I would lean to the CZ and either model.
The wood stock can be cut easily and a recoil pad installed.
While the ruger may be the right size from the factory I really have a problem with using a .308 size action for the shorter than 308 round, especally in a rifle that is top loaded.  the mag makes it easy to load and un load.
I have a CZ 527 American M1 and it is accurate and fun to shoot.
I also have a Remington M700 SPS in 223 that is great to shoot but is a little bit of a pain to get the rounds lined up in the mag quickly and you have to slide the rounds forward a little to make the next one load easy.

You will be missing a very good boat, if you don't have HER check out the new (2008) Savage Model 25 Classic Sporter



It's built around a newly-designed petite action, that's no larger than it needs to be for it's two chamberings (.223 & .204 Ruger).
The Sporter is NOT as large or as heavy as the Model 25 Varminters - which have heavy barrels and lamo stocks (also heavy)

That's Savage's attempt at copying what CZ has been doing forever, the micro-Mauser, except it's still not a Mauser action.  I own a Savage, it's a good rifle with a good trigger.  I also own a CZ, it's an excellent rifle with an excellent trigger.  My most accurate rifle, as a matter of fact.

Look on GunBroker for a Rem 788 in 223.  Saw some recently.  Cut the stock back to 13" or whatever is appropriate.  Great little rifle.

Biggest difference between the Savage and the CZ is the price.  The Savage with a really nice piece of glass will run you less than just the CZ.

The Mauser style action is strong, but it isn't the end all be all.

   Being very petite, If she has not shot a .223, she may enjoy the mild .204 caliber.  However if she is satisfied with the .223's recoil, then she should be fine with a CZ 527 Carbine. JMTC ;D

last  year I  bought a cz 527 in 762x39  (cheap ammo) almost  a 3030  just a little better
love the gun
this year I bought a cz 527 in 223  (cheap ammo& flat shooting)  and think it got better-- I put one of the new buris temberline scopes on it(4.5x14--32) looks like the 762 will be my brush gun and my 223 will be the field gun

Very similar setup to what I was thinking..

I hunt with a 2-7x32 Elite 3200

I want to set her up with a very small 223 CZ or Hawkeye or any one of the other small 223's suggested, with the idea of allowing her to use the Elite 2-7x32 in the off season.

I also recently purchased a timberline scope (4.5 -14x32) as well for my 7mm-08 mod 7 to use for punching paper on weekends. Come deer season I fully planned to put my Bushnell elite 2-7x 32 back on my mod 7, but now I'm not so sure , this Timberline is as compact as the Elite and the Timberlines clarity is just unbelievable. all I can say is WOW BURRIS TIMBERLINES ROCK. I cannot believe the clarity, and solid construction, and the AO feature is awesome. UNBELIEVABLE for a scope of this price or any other price.  Burris did this one right!!!

DW may just end up with one of the above suggested 223's permanently scoped with an Elite 2-7x32.

Define a really nice piece of glass?  There isn't $100 difference between the CZ and the Savage.

I don't own a CZ centerfire, but I do own several in .22 rimfire - excellent rifles.  I own a Ruger Compact, in 7mm/08, and it to is a fine rifle, with low recoil.  Another rifle not mentioned here is the Kimber #84.  A couple hundred bucks more then the others, it comes in at well under 6lbs, nice walnut stock, accurate, well made, and using a 22 inch barrel.  Problem is a lot of makers use full size actions, then have to cut the barrel too short to save weight.  Screws up the balance on some rifles, as well as alters the balistics.  Kimber, and it sounds like Savage, downsize their rifles to fit the cartridge.  I have a #84 in .308, and it is a tack driver, and balances well.

CZ carbines are wonderful rifles I have a .223 and 7.62x39 and they will be some of the last I would trade off.

My 8 year old nephew shoots my 7.62 without any problems at all.

What's she going to use the rifle for? If for deer hunting a .243 would be a better choice especially if you reload. You can load youth loads that will kick about the same as a .223.

She has npo interest in deer hunting,
She would like to go with me to the range occasionally and shoot paper. Probably 250 yards max.
She does not like the look of Target rifles.

The big difference is that they can usually be found for a good bit less than MSRP without looking too hard.  The CZ 527 I looked at was the 527 Kevlar and it was priced right at the MSRP and the Savage 25 right next to it was a little more than $150 less than MSRP IIRC.  That left over $300 difference in price.  You cant get an excellent scope for that amount of cash.  That was my reasoning.  The 527 carbine narrows the real world difference to around $200.  Still enough for a better than merely "decent" scope.

Look into a Thompson/Center carbine with one of the older 21" barrels.  It will be very light and short due to the single shot action.  I haven't had one in .223, but do have them in .17 HMR and .22 Hornet, and they are very accurate.

woodchuckhntr beat me to it. I have a Contender carbine: 21 in bbl and under 6 lbs with a Burris 4x Compact scope, in .223. A tack drivin' son of a gun. Put a one-point baldric style sling on it, attached just behind the pg, and she can walk around with it with the muzzle right about at knee height. Slick.

We were up at our range shooting M1 Garands when a member arrived with his date a very petite hongkong flight attendant,we asked the member if he'd like to shoot a garand he backed away stating  it has too much recoil, then we asked his date who readily agreed she fired 8 rounds and said it was great then her date decided he'd try it.He was amazed that the recoil wasn't as  bad as he had envisoned. A small person can easily handle a 6mm or 243 as they are light recoiling rifles.

With all due respect: That "new", petite-action Savage model 25 looks an awful lot like the action of my Savage Model 40 .22 Hornet, a Canadian-made reworked rimfire. Not really a problem, as mine shoots fine. BUT I wouldn't put it in the same ballpark as the sweet little CZ 527 (.221 Fireball) I also have.
