Took the " big stick " , 1874 sharps 45/70, to the range for the first time this weekend and turned loose about two dozen rounds...Boy what a big push...but great fun...the pain came when the rear tang sight whips back and slaps your forehead....my brother who accompanied me is going to buy me a leather tanker helmet to use.....nah!, just put on a cap...I was firing some of Wayne Doudna's 385 gas check slugs and holding two inch groups at 100yds. with them....At the local gun show later on that weekend, I found a nice globe front sight with ghost ring inserts..this should give me about a 1/2 MOA reduction, the rifle came with blade front sights, Hopefully by playing with the powder charge, I am using 36gr. IMR 3031, will tighten up the hits a little more. Then off to the 200 and 300 yd. ranges. It was my first experience with set triggers, which take a butterfly fart to set them off, and I am going to like them. However it should be the final rifle to use at the range because it ruins you for shooting the other rifles. I am in love with this thing.....boy! it shure draws attention at the range.....I shoot with a bunch of C&R guys and they all are waiting for a chance to have a go with this one.....I will have to take a snapper cap round with me for trigger training....
