old shaky hands an moa
« on: May 15, 2009, 12:19:37 PM »
i had to try something so heres what i did.. mabe you could try it..
shaky hands have made shooting a frustrating thing lately..
put wt on each end of a bungee cord.. the amount depends on what woks.. put reciever on good sandbag.. an drape bungee across barrel end,as far back as is practical..see how steady it makes your shot.. in some guns [sports barrels etc the wt will necessarily be limited..
i was shooting my 30 30.. its first time ive shot moa an better in a month of sundays an sure felt good. im sure it wouldn t be allowed in competition but i know i could fix something so it could work in the woods. good luck hope it gives you a good day like it did me. slim

If you do it properly from a bench with sand bags you shouldn't need anything more. Once long ago when I was teaching Faye to shoot I set up the rifle I was teaching her with on my bags and lined the cross hairs up on the head of a turkey small bore rifle silhouette. For those who don't know it's smaller than a dime.

I then talked to her a bit and explained about lining up the cross hairs and not moving the gun just letting it sit on the bag and that it would remain still. I then reached over and pulled the trigger without even looking thru the scope and hit the tiny little turkey head out there at 75 yards or so from us.

It's really just a matter of learning to properly use sandbags and anyone can learn it. She did and went on to win first place in the only competition match she has ever shot in.

Not really intending to compare my shooting to yours or anyone's for that matter just commenting on how great properly set up sand bags can be. I use lead shot bags filled with sand. Some I fill loosely some tightly. I stack the tightly filled ones under loosely filled ones to build up the height needed and always have the rifle or handgun setting on a loosely filled one.

Set them up so you can have the rifle at a comfortable height so you aren't leaning over into the bench but sitting more or less upright. You can then sit the rifle on the bags and do not need to touch the fore arm at all with your hands. With both butt stock and fore end on bags it takes your movements out of the picture.

To make the final adjustment to put the cross hairs on target you can squeeze either the forward or rear bag depending on whether you want the crosshairs to go up or down. It is an amazingly solid set up and makes shooting to the potential of the rifle/load combo a lot easier.

Learning proper bench technique is the secret to small groups.

Sounds like an interesting technique.  One would think that hanging a weighted bungee cord across the barrel at any point would mess with the harmonics and possibly throw a shot off once the cord was removed.

it was put on back where the stock was supporting the barrel. didn t hurt the gun..i was having a frustrating experience then due to shaky hands.... ive found some better days since  for groups w my 06 at 200.which is where she is zeroed.. im making some longer shots now.. 4-450 etc..i apply pressure on the barrel end up next to  the scope..just enough to stop the shaking.. then pull the stock into my shoulder firmly..my base on these long shots is just a red dirt bank..i still get a little trouble but not to bad ,some days...i gotta do this now ,as this shakes not gonna get any better..slim...ps plan on going out today for 2 shots with 180 grn an 2 with 165 gn..
