.22 convertibles...............
« on: May 16, 2009, 04:44:08 PM »
I am seeing posts that suggest  22 convertibles are less accurate with 22lr because the barrel has to be
made slightly larger due to the slight differance in diamater of 22 mag ammo.   Is this true ?
if so most double action 22LR revolvers would be more accurate then most convertibles shooting 22LR.

Contact Ruger and ask them! To look at convertibles go to www.lipseys.com and click on Lipsey's Exclusives made by Ruger just for them.I have a 4 5/8" barreled ss convertible ruger single six 22lr/22mag my dealer ordered for me.

My ruger convertable shoots the 50 grain Federal WMR most accurate.  About 1" at 25 yards.  After that, all the other brands or 22 WMR and 22LR are all the same, about 2 to 3 inches.

Because of the cost, I still shoot .22LR most.  I still hit football sized rocks at 50 and 75 yards off hand, and thats all I need to enjoy a sunday afternoon.

I would not worry.  I have not had a convertable that did not shoot just as well with one as the other.  Ruger only uses one barrel size for both, so it's not a problem.  44 Man

The Single Six's before being convertible to 22mag and the Single Six BISLEY model (which was offered in 22LR only) had a lower MINIMUM bore spec: .219 I believe.  The Bisley model was for a time the only one available in non-convertible form of course, and they considered the lower spec reserved for the Bisley because of its 'target' orientation and history.

This is according to Ruger Technical Service a couple years ago, but yes, it was a lower spec than what is found on convertible barrels.

I apolige, my mistake.  But as I have said, I have never had a single six convertable that did not shoot just as good with .22 lr as with .22 mag.  Don't worry about the details, just take it out and enjoy it.  44 Man

Stuart C.- did you get the info on the Bisley bore diameter over the phone, or in writing? The reason I ask is that I called Ruger a couple of years ago, and was told over the phone that the Bisley had the same (Magnum-spec) bore as the rest of the Single-Six line, including the Convertibles. I was told the same thing regarding my "Star" model Single-Six, which was a single-cylinder model in .22LR.

According to the gurus over at Rugerforum.com, all of the Single-Sixes since 1959 have had the larger bore diameter of the Convertibles.

Not trying to flame you, just looking for more information.

No worries.
I got my answers directly from Ruger on about the third phone call as I recollect - to answer this exact question for myself.

Like 44man, I haven't seen any real difference between mag and lr rounds in mine.  I've never locked mine down in a rest to see how precisely and consistently it shoots.  I see some variation with ammo but my single six accuracy has more to do with the right finger part than the barrel part.  ;D

Due to cost and setup I can just about guarantee Ruger only uses one 22LR barrel size in the Single Six line.  It would not make sense to switch back and forth between the two for a manufacturer.
