Botched kit!
« on: May 17, 2009, 12:40:05 PM »
A couple of years ago I bought a Kit gun someone had botched badly. I paid $50.00 for it. I got as far as gluing the crack inside the inleting for the lock. Turns out I have the same problems as the original owner. Namely it was a bigger job than I thought, and I don't have the instructions. I had planned to finish the wood & metal work, install a more traditional rear sight and brown the metal.
It's .50 & Spanish made. Any tips? Should I scrap it & buy a complete gun from Dixie. Would the kits from Dixe be easier?  I have wanted to build my own muzzel loader since I was a kid.
Of course back then that was all we had, Just kidding, but at least they looked like muzzel loaders and shot black powder.
Any tips appricated.
Jerry

It's .50 & Spanish made.

Boy, that covers about 3 manufacturers just off the top of my head. A little more info could be helpfull. Can you post photo's?
There are a lot of tricks to salvage common errors, sometimes too much damage is done or if it's a poorley set-up kit the skill level to assemble is more than novice or entry level. I got a spanish made kentucky pistol kit for a bargin price at a gun show last fall I would have never been able to put together 10yrs ago.
Is it a one piece or two piece stock? look for names on the barrel like CVA, Traditions, Jukar, Ardesa; or Mountian, Hawkin, Kentucky

CVA I would have recognized. Next time I go out to the barn i will look. The patch box is big. CVA had little round one's I think. I think I can do it if I had the time. The Idea of buyinf a stock from E-bay isn't all bad. I could make knife handle out of this one. It appears to be walnut.

Well I'm not familiar with Monarch. I did a web search and didn't find anything,  so I can't say if CVA will fit.
Too many variables sight un-seen.
CVA made 2 different locks, one with a rounded back, one with a pointy back.
The tang can be different, they made a bolt through solid breech and tang, and a hooked breech.
They had available different width barrels.
CVA and Traditions used the same makers for many years, and many of those parts are interchangable but they are still type and style specific.
Don't loose hope yet, perhaps some one will come along in a few days, know the maker and give you more info. In the meantime go to ebay muzzle loader stuff and cruise the item for sale paying attention to the photo's of locks and barrels and find stuff that looks the same. You'll get an Idea of the differances available and primary costs,,you can look for free! ;)  ebay,,sporting goods,,blackpowder,,,

Just for craps, there is another possible solution.  Sears and some other wood working tool manufacturers sold an item called a duplicarver.  It was basically a 3- d pantograph for a router.   I haven't priced them in ages, but there was a cheaper model for around 60.00.   use the old stock as a model and carve a new one.  At some of the woodworking forums they even have plans and descriptions for how to make one.  I made one years ago that worked like a giant key cutting machine.  The stock and wood blank mounted in a cradle that spun around and the router bit was the same distance extended as the stylus that went over the piece being copied.    In addition, some stock companies already make copies of stocks for the better known kit manuafacturers.
