I have had it for three years now, and although I shoot fairly decent groups with it, I still can't seem to get consistent from one day to the next. Usually I am to the left. I posted on this a while back and folks gave me some great suggestions. I still shoot consistently to the left no matter how much I practice and do the things people suggested. But what I discovered yesterday is that it is not just me, but perhaps me + the gun. I shot a friend's super blackhawk and I was dead center on the target and nailing clay pigeons at 30 yds off hand. The gun was sweet and it just seemed so natural. Is it possible the GP 100 and I just don't fit?

I am thinking I should part with it and get a Superblackhawk. What I really want is a nice hunting revolver and I am sure I would be better off with the .44 anyway. So, should I just go trade it in? I don't really want to get rid of it, partly because it is the first handgun I ever bought and it really is a nice gun. Just frustrating for me to shoot. Thoughts? Thanks.

How does your friend shoot with your pistol?

Is your barrel canted??   I've seen photos of this on another forum and the suggestion there was to send it back to ruger to get the barrel put on straight.

Come to think of it, he shot a bit to the left also. How do you tell if the barrel is canted? Is it visible or so slight you can't see it?

 Aren't the sights adjustable?

Not sure if all the terms are correct but here goes, to check for canted barrel.  Where the barrel is attached to the frame look at the topstrap.  The  top of the barrel should be straight or parallel with or in line with the topstrapof the frame   A canted barrel will be cocked at bit oneway or the other from the topstap/frame.   You may be able to move your sights over to the right but if your all the way over and still shooting left and the barrel is canted, send it back.  Also have someone else shoot it to help with your own errors.

You'll drive yourself nutz doing this. I've seen several people all at once try to figure out if 3 different guns (mine was one of them) were canted one way or the other and they all just kept passing the guns around to the point I stepped in and told them to please go outside. ::) My GP100 has the same problem (shoots to the left about 3-4") and ruger told me to send the gun back to be fixed. Never did it yet. Just ran the sights to the right and it hits where I aim now. Maybe when I feel like parting with the gun for a spell I'll send it back, but it appears they are backed up with problems in the repair dept. at the present time. I dont think this is an uncommon problem with rugers.

My sights are over to the right about as far as they can go. I even put the front sight to the right side of the sight picture - frustrating.

My GP 100 shoots inconsistent as well. I agree, its a nice peice but it can be frustrating. I'll just keep mine so I can pass it on when I croak! I really do like the gun in spite of its shortcomings.

next time you shoot it, have someone watch / inspect how you are gripping the handgun.   then, change your grip with the angle of your hand in relation to your wrist, and in the relation of the handgun to your hand itself.   consistency is absolutely critical to handgun accuracy.....but you have consistency already.   i suspect a change in how you hold the piece will make the difference you need.

What kind of ammo are you using? The Ruger barrels are often a little rough when new. This doesn't work well with lead bullets. I take my new guns and shoot them a bunch with jacketed bullets to polish and burnish the barrels before I start shooting lead. You could have a little leading in your barrel that could be destroying your accuracy. The barrel could also be over rotated during assembly at the factory. You could send the gun in and let Ruger look at it. They can easily fix the over rotation. They might find the barrel out of spec and replace it for you.

If at first you don't succeed....

Send it in to get fixed/replaced.  Ruger likes to pride themselves on their quality.  They'll work with ya!
