no ammunition available
« on: May 17, 2009, 05:40:35 PM »
I bough a 380 auto yesterday of course it will take me 48 hours to cool off, but discovered that there is absolutely no ammunition available at any store or on line of any kind for this gun. I understand that the government has first dibs on ammo, but this is not world war II. Yes some people are buying out all supply that the dealers get, even though we need to allow other citizens to get some. Is the government behind this or is this just a selfish hoarding on individual's part? The web sites say no ammo anticipated before October or November. I give up. I suppose I will cancel my purchase of this firearm.

I would still buy the gun while you still can.
Try the big box stores for ammo, but you have to check stock often as it goes quick.

There's all the ammo you want on gunbroker, if you don't mind paying several times what it's worth.

Congrats on the new toy ,

I sold both of mine , and gladly so .... I'm sure the ammo will catch up eventually but i can still get the 9 ,40 and 45 that are needed for my stable of automatics alot easier then 380 .. I think it isnt the gov's need for the 380 caliber ... Its just the calibers lack of recoil and over all popularity with concealed carry and home defensive minded people that own them that has caused this shortage ...

The shortage is being taken advantage of a in a bad way too ... The price that some are asking for it is obsurd on the auction sites ... I have a couple boxes left , if you have no luck finding any let me know and maybe we can work something ..

A friend and ran all over the country and put about a 100 miles on looking for .380 ammunition.  He was looking for the new load that Hornady is advertising but not stock at the shops yet.  I took my buddy into an outdoor sporting goods store, which my friend described as the real thing, friend service, good advice, and a positive attitude.

He bought a couple boxes of Barnes bullets and I purchased some minor item.  But the friendly clerk told us that he was able to stock 9mm, 40 Cal., and 45 but he had a hard time getting .380 ammo.  He said in the past he just stocked enough to keep but with a low demand for it.  .380, along with 32 ACP, was low demand items.  He had been selling .380 stock that had not moved in years.

He felt the low passed demand for it affected current product.

Unfortunatly it is like a run on the banks of the 20's.
when one store sells out of ammo everyone panics and heads out to get what they can.
Also the Bozo residing in the White house and his Atorney General have said things like we will not let the 2nd amendment stand in the way of a gun ban and they are talking about a 500% tax on ammo.  So even at inflated prices it will be worth it to stock up and not have to pay the 500% ammo tax.  At some point there will be a saturation of ammo in your garage and you will stop buying and then others too will hit thier saturation point.  hopefully the ammo saturation point will be before they enact some other dumb law that does nothing to deter crime only harass law abiding citizens.
Why not make the law;  Use a firearm in a crime and serve 10 years maditory federal prison after any state sentence.
add 5 years for a stolen firearm.  If the Federal government needs $ then make it a complete seizeure of all assets of the convicted.  If need be we can go to hot beds in the prisons like they had in the Navy sub service to increase the number of inmates.

consider reloading.  A Lee Loadmaster and some cast or plated 90 gr bullets will get you going.  Maybe just as scarce at the moment, but over time the press will pay off.

The Press is a great Idea but there are NO small pistol primers out there right now and he will be in the same perdicament. >:(
Cool new pistol and nothing to shoot out of it.   :'(
But again this will end and ammo will be available again in large amounts.  the question is will it be taxes to death.
When will the morons in government learn to leave us alone.  And why are we always the ones to have to do with less when they over spend?  Shouldn't we restrict thier benefits, staff and pay when they spend all of our money?
If we are in debt past our budget why not cut back on the politicians pay, benefits, and staff.  I know I would be happy with my congress having a few less staff members than not having other people cut.  Here in CA for example they are cutting teachers, firemen, police, and other services.  Heck sell the suburban the CA congress is riding around in and stick those CHP officers, that are driving them around on the street.  In stead of firing a teacher let go a couple of congressional aids and staff members.  I need educated kids and safe freeways I do not need my elected officials to sluff off thier work on some staff member!

Why is it selfish to be stocking up?  Some call it hording?  Whatever word you use, why is it bad?  Because you missed out?
Seriously the run started in November with the election.  I too can not find some of the stuff I'd like but its called the free market, supply is not keeping up with demand!  I consider that LIGHT YEARS ahead of the options the cause of this panic (Obamanation and fellow criminals) buying is offering (illegal shoving this "stuff" down our throats?).
As Americans we have gotten spoiled with easy availablity of almost anything, and have abused credit to get it (sterotypically speaking).  Now we have a bunch of socialists in power who will kill supply, tax what is available, and ensure those who work for a living have no more than those living on the dole.
Perhaps this will upset enough folks so they become politically active and throw these bums out!

I never said it was a bad thing.  All I said was it was like the run on the banks.  everyone is trying to get what they want or need in fear of the geek in the white house taxing the crap out of it.  I just hope that everyone hits there saturation point before the fools do something stupid.
I did not miss out.  OK I did a little and have NO, repeat No 38 special ammo for target in the house.  But I have enough 380, 9, 40, 44 and 45 for steel and plinking at the range.  It hurt to shoot the 110 grain Sliver tips at the range the other day teaching the office secratery how to use her 38.
I too have been buying what I can here and there.  not only target ammo but hunting as well.  Next trip to Bass pro will have my truck weighed down with Shotgun ammo for Water fowel.

I went skeet shooting yesterday and used up what I had left of a 150 round feild pack. I don't remember what I paid for it a couple of years ago but I  hate to see what it will cost to replace it.

No Kidding,
I have a 14 year old Nephew that can go through a brick of 22, 100 rounds of 223, 308, or 06 and then look at me to see what else "we" can shoot.

I think the ammo supply is getting better.  Recently I stopped by a local store who must have just gotten in a shipment from somewhere because they had full shelves and AR's in every configuration you could imagine.

Actually I bought it to go dove hunting and got skunked. I just used it now because it was all I had.

Between,
Trap 5x a month, Skeet once ever other omonth, Sporting clays once a month, Handgun Steel once a month, Running Deer once a month, Hi Power once a month, Bullseye every other month, and Three gun once a quarter.  My ammo bill was really running high.
Not to mention the DU and QU shoots as well as taking my customers to the ranges as well to shoot.  I would rather shoot sporting clays than golf.

Just came back from a Houston gun show and every table selling brass, bullets, etc. was so swamped it was unreal. Since my carry gun is a .380 I was interested in that ammo and finally found a guy selling 200 rds. of brass for $16. Upon closer examination about half was military so I refrained. The man right behind me bought every bag available;about 2000 rds. I could have kicked myself!  Learn from my mistake. Kix

I finally found about half a dozen boxes at a gun show. I bought one box for a dollar a round. Some gun dealers were telling me when they got in some types of ammo or primers one guy would buy the whole lot. At least I have some ammo now, but not for plinking. Thanks for the help.

That 380 thing is strange.
I have a case of it and i have gun stores trying to buy it from me.
My cousin is on a Coast Guard Cutter and he said they are down by one half the amount of 9mm they usually carry in the armory's magazine stores.
They have cut out firearms training and anything wasteful.
This is only a Cutter ,have any of you heard any of this elsewhere ?

I am starting to see the Wal-Mart stores in the area with more ammo. I just bought a 100 pack of 9mm Friday. One store had .380 ammo, and one gentleman bought it all up. The lady at the counter said it was the first .380 ammo they have had in 5 months. I am seeing more 9mm and 40 S&W even .45 ACP ammo now, then I did when I returned from Iraq in Jan. I need to stock up on some more 40 S&W ammo, and I should be good to go for awhile. Now the one ammo I can't find in the last mont is .22lr.

A gun range I go to limits you to two boxes of ammo in each caliber, but at least they're starting to get some in.

Lots of ammo turned up at Saturday's Gun Show in Fort Smith, Arkansas yesterday.   Mostly older packaging in off brands with NEW price tags.   Same with reloading supplies.  Old containers of powder and off brand primers with sky high prices.    Saw more black rifles than ever.   Mostly Colt this time around ~ $1500 + or - $100.

+1!!!  All the other ammo got so expensive that everyone is dusting off their 22's and going to the range.  I know I am, and I see more 22's at the range everytime I go now.

My son-in-law called yesterday looking for .22 shells.  He wants to take the girls out.  He still has the five boxes I gave him for Christmas.  I told him I would share on a shoot but otherwise would not give up any.

I follow the online auctions just to see how the pricing wave is and it seems to me like the public isn't paying the obnoxious prices for guns and ammo for the most part anymore.  There are still some specialty items that are overly expensive, but I'm very optimistic and hope that by the end of summer we'll be able to walk into a store and buy a brick of 22 ammo for under $15 again.
