270 gas checks
« on: May 18, 2009, 04:47:39 AM »
got out a couple of old lyman 270 sc molds one r n design and the other a spitzer pt. Been having them for about 30-35yrs. well cast about 150 of each and then went on to cast .375 s and .458 s.  anyway long story short when i got around to sizing the 270s I discovered i had no gas checks for 270  you guessed it no one has any in stock.  While on the phone with one of the suppliers he suggested i use 7mm gas checks (I got them)as they are only .007 larger???   What do you think?  bill439

Sounds reasonable. I'd give it a try and see if they'll stay on if so they should do OK. If they won't then you'll need to keep looking.

waiting on my .277 h&i die to come in, I hope the opening in the die will accept the larger gas check.  Will post results when die shows up.  thanks for your vote of confidence GB, Bill439

This is one reason I have been learning how to paper patch bullets for smokeless powder. No gaschecks needed, and way higher velocity potential. Plus I'm cheap and won't pay the price for gaschecks. Now paper, that I can afford.
